Horses, healing and becoming who you were always meant to be. Hi! I'm Cheyenne, The Native Cowgirl.

Helping women reconnect with themselves, reclaim their lives and take back the reins. I am a multifaceted rural entrepreneur, a fifth-generation RanchHer, and proud to carry on the legacy of strong women in agriculture. My family and I raise draft-cross horses, and I am an enrolled member of the Oglala Lakota Sioux Tribe from Pine Ridge, South Dakota. Honoring my heritage, preserving ranch life, a

nd celebrating the role of women in agriculture are at the heart of what I do. I believe in spreading positivity and inspiration wherever I can. My personal journey has been one of transformation - I lost over 100 pounds and have kept it off for nearly two years. That experience fueled my passion for helping other women step into their best selves. As a certified health coach, I now guide women toward healthier, happier, and more confident lives through sustainable habits and mindset shifts. The Native Cowgirl is more than just a brand - it’s a lifestyle rooted in grit, growth, and gratitude. 25 years ago today.

I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing when the world seemed to stop.

Like so many Americans, I watched in disbelief as the events of September 11, 2001 unfolded. It’s one of those days that is forever etched into our memories.

Today, I remember the lives that were lost, the families whose lives were forever changed, and the brave first responders who ran toward danger when everyone else was trying to escape.

My thoughts and prayers are with every person who still carries the weight of that day.

May we never forget the lives lost.
May we never forget the heroes.
May we never forget how our country came together.

25 years later…we remember. 🇺🇸

Happy Labor Day, friends. 🇺🇸

We spend so much of our lives working.

Working to build a life. Working to take care of the people we love. Working toward the next goal, the next season, the next thing that needs us.

But somewhere in all that doing, it’s easy to forget that we were never meant to measure our worth by how much we accomplish.

Today, I hope you give yourself permission to slow down a little.

Go outside. Sit in the sunshine. Pet the horse. Take the walk. Laugh with someone you love. Do something simply because it makes you happy.

There will always be more work waiting tomorrow.

Today, remember the woman doing all that work matters, too. ❤️

Happy Labor Day from our little piece of Montana.

There was a time when I felt guilty for almost everything that involved choosing me.

For saying no.
For needing rest.
For changing my mind.
For wanting something different.
For outgrowing things I once thought I had to hold onto.

Somewhere along the way, I realized that taking care of myself doesn’t mean I care less about everyone else.

It means I finally understand that I belong on the list, too.

I’m learning to listen to what makes me feel alive again…horses, photography, being outside, creating, dreaming and simply making room for more of what feels like me.

Maybe this season of life isn’t about becoming someone new.

Maybe it’s about finding your way back to the woman who has been there all along. ❤️

What’s one thing you’ve stopped feeling guilty about?

Somewhere along the way, I think a lot of us forget to ask ourselves a really simple question…

What makes me happy?

Not what needs to be done.
Not what everyone else needs from me.
Not what I should be doing.

What actually makes me feel happy, peaceful and alive?

For me, it’s horses. Taking photos. Being outside. Creating things. Spending time on the land. Doing work that feels meaningful.

And lately, I’ve been reminding myself that those things deserve a place in my life too.

Maybe we don’t always need a complete reinvention.

Maybe we just need to remember what lights us up…and do a little more of that.🫶🏼

What’s something that makes you genuinely happy?

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the woman who spends years holding everything together.

Her family.
Her work.
Her home.
Her responsibilities.
Everyone who needs her.

She becomes so good at being strong that sometimes she doesn’t even realize how far she has wandered from herself.

Until one day she looks around and wonders…

Where did I go?

I know that feeling.

This season of my life has taught me that finding your way back to yourself doesn’t always require becoming someone new.

Sometimes it’s remembering who you were before life got so loud.

The woman who dreamed.
The woman who laughed easily.
The woman who trusted herself.
The woman who knew what she wanted.
The woman who felt alive.

For me, so much of that remembering happens outside.

With dirt under my boots.
A horse beside me.
Wind across the prairie.
Enough quiet to finally hear my own thoughts again.

Maybe that’s why I’ve always believed horses teach us so much about life.

You cannot ride forward while constantly looking behind you.

You gather your reins.
You find your seat.
You look where you want to go.

And eventually…you ask your horse to move forward.

I think women need permission to do that too.

To remember.
To reconnect.
To restore.
To release what no longer belongs to them.
To reclaim themselves.

And then…to ride forward.

There is something new taking shape here at The Native Cowgirl.

Actually, maybe “new” isn’t the right word.

It feels more like I’m finally coming home to the work I was always meant to do.

And I cannot wait to bring you along.🫶🏼

September feels different to me.

Maybe because I’m different.

I’ve spent a lot of years doing what women do so well…taking care of everyone else. Building businesses. Raising a family. Working. Ranching. Showing up. Pushing through. Holding things together when life got hard.

And life has been hard.

But somewhere along the way, I started realizing there is a difference between being strong and simply surviving.

There is also a difference between living the life you have…and intentionally choosing the life you want.

That’s what this season is becoming for me.

I want more time behind my camera.

More horses.

More evenings watching the sun disappear behind the mountains.

More connection to the land, my culture, my faith and the things that remind me who I am.

More purpose.

More courage.

More of the woman I was before the world told me who I needed to be.

And maybe most importantly…

I want to hold the reins of my own life.

Not because I can control everything that happens. I’ve lived enough life to know better than that.

But I CAN choose my direction.

I can decide what I carry forward and what I finally put down.

I can listen to that quiet voice inside me that has been saying, There is more for you.

And I have a feeling I’m not the only woman hearing it.

September is the beginning of something new here at The Native Cowgirl.

We’re still going to talk about horses, ranch life, health, resilience and all the things we’ve always shared.

But we’re going deeper.

Into identity.

Purpose.

Healing.

Courage.

Connection.

And what happens when a woman remembers that the reins have been in her hands all along.

I’m ready.

Are you? 🪶

Somewhere along the way, a lot of women lose pieces of themselves.

Not all at once.

It happens quietly.

We become wives. Mothers. Caregivers. Business owners. Employees. The dependable one. The strong one. The woman everybody calls when something needs to be handled.

And we get really good at taking care of everyone and everything.

But sometimes, in the middle of all that doing, we stop asking ourselves a very important question…

How am I doing?

Not the kids.
Not the marriage.
Not the business.
Not the house.
Not everybody else.

YOU.

What makes you feel alive?

What makes you feel strong?

What do you miss doing?

When was the last time you did something simply because it made you happy?

I’ve been asking myself some of those questions lately.

And I’m realizing that maybe this season of life isn’t about becoming someone new at all.

Maybe it’s about remembering the woman who has been there all along.

The woman who still has dreams.

The woman who wants to ride the horse. Take the picture. Walk the trail. Laugh until her stomach hurts. Feel good in her body. Try something new. And wake up excited about her life again.

Maybe we don’t need to reinvent ourselves.

Maybe we just need to find our way back to ourselves.

And I have a feeling I’m not the only woman who needs that reminder right now.

So tell me…

What is one part of YOU that you’d like to find again?

There’s something about a horse that a woman’s heart understands. ❤️🐴

Did you know horses can hear a human heartbeat from several feet away?

Their hearts beat much slower than ours. And when we spend time with them, our bodies can begin to settle into their calm.

Maybe that’s why so many of us feel different around horses.

Women carry so much.

We take care of families. We build careers and businesses. We worry about the people we love. We carry responsibilities, expectations, grief, stress, and sometimes things we never even talk about.

And then we walk into the barn…

We hear the soft sound of horses eating hay.
We smell that familiar horse smell.
We put our hand on a warm neck.
We breathe.

And for a little while, the world gets quiet.

A horse doesn’t need you to explain why you’re tired.

She doesn’t care what you accomplished today, what you look like, how productive you were, or whether you have everything figured out.

She just knows you’re there.

I think that’s one of the greatest gifts horses give us. They bring us back to the present. Back to our breath. Back to ourselves.

So if you’ve ever walked away from the barn feeling lighter, calmer, or somehow more like YOU again…there may be a reason.

Maybe some of the best therapy really does have four legs, a mane, and a heartbeat. ❤️

Who else feels like their horse is their happy place?

Sometimes finding your way back to yourself doesn’t mean becoming someone new.

Sometimes it means remembering who you were before life got so heavy.

I’ve been thinking about that a lot lately.

What makes me feel like me?

Horses.
Ranch life.
Being outside.
Taking pictures.
Creating something beautiful.
Walking.
Watching the sunrise.
Noticing the little things that I used to hurry past.

For a while, I think I was so busy just getting through each day that I stopped doing some of the things that actually make me feel alive.

So I’m changing that.

Not with some huge life overhaul.
Not with a list of 25 new goals.
Not by expecting myself to suddenly have everything figured out.

Just one little thing at a time.

Yesterday, I went for a walk.

Today, I’m going to pay attention.

To the horses in the pasture.
To the light.
To the sky.
To the beauty that has been right in front of me all along.

Maybe healing isn’t always about moving forward.

Maybe sometimes it’s about finding your way home to yourself. ❤️

And I think I’m starting to do that.

What is something that makes you feel most like YOU?

Three months. ❤️

That’s how long it’s been since I’ve really been able to WALK because of my knee.

More than 40 years ago, I had a horse fall on me and injure that knee. I was just a kid, and apparently that old injury decided it wasn’t quite finished with me yet. 😂 It came back to haunt me in a big way this past spring.

But today…I’m smiling.

Because it feels SO GOOD to be getting my steps in again. 🙌

Walking might be one of the most underrated things we can do for our health. We tend to think exercise has to be hard, complicated or happen inside a gym to count.

It doesn’t.

MOVE YOUR BODY.

Walk. Stretch. Get outside. Keep those joints moving. Keep those muscles working. And when you think you’re done, sometimes you need to remind yourself that you’re capable of a little more than you think.

As a health coach, I know how important mobility becomes as we get older. But these last three months have made me appreciate it on a whole different level.

You don’t realize what a gift it is to simply lace up your shoes and GO…until you can’t.

So this girl is pretty darn excited to be back doing something I genuinely LOVE. 💙

Thank goodness for my Thrive, a body that is letting me get after it again, and maybe most importantly…the WILL to keep pushing forward.

Here’s to getting stronger, one step at a time. 👟

And if you’ve been sitting more than you should lately, consider this your reminder:

Get up. Get outside. Take the walk. Your future self will thank you. ❤️
