I make portraits for Black people who believe that LOVE is their birthright. To live in and express that love through the fullness of their being IS their LEGACY.

Every image is a love letter to them, to the ones who came before, and to those to come. Our love is a testimony of our humanity and it surely is beautiful.

P.S. released that album on Black Love Day and she is teaching us what it looks, sounds, and feels like to embrace and emanate with love. ARE YALL LISTENING???

Melody Short, co-founder-founder of , entrepreneur, and Richmond native, sat down with me to share what it meant to grow up in one of Richmond’s most storied neighborhoods.

Her upbringing, her family, her faith, and her community weren’t just influences. They became the foundation of everything she’s built and the reason she remains deeply invested in the flourishing of Black people.

With the recent announcement of the Richmond Free Press closing, Melody’s words hit differently.

Who tells our stories when our institutions are gone?
We do.
In our own voices. On our own terms. Before it’s too late.

This is what Legacy Sessions is about: preserving the stories of people like Melody. Whether you’re an entrepreneur or community builder or an elder with wisdom and knowledge to share. Our legacies deserve to be documented.

Watch. Share. And ask yourself: whose story in your life needs to be preserved?

Legacy Sessions are now open. Link in bio to apply.

World War II veteran James Drye proudly wears his Veterans of Foreign Wars hat. Mr. Drye, who at the time of this session, was 100 years old, recalls his service in the army as a quartermaster, driving trucks and transporting supplies across the Himalayan Mountains. During his interview, he displayed his letter from President Biden, thanking him for his service. He also credited the GI Bill with helping him accomplish his dream to become a radio technician, which eventually helped him forge a career in aviation technology.

Happy Veterans Day to all who have served to uphold and defend the Constitution and protect our freedoms, even when those freedoms weren’t guaranteed to them. We salute you.

Legacy looks back, but it also looks forward.

This is Courtney. She booked a holiday mini-session with me at the end of 2024 to announce her pregnancy. Fast forward to June, and her beautiful baby boy is here - photographed in her parents’ living room where you know he’s absolutely spoiled as the first grandson on both sides.

During our session, I was overcome by a profound sense of emotion. Yall, I cried (for those who don’t know me, I’m a crier). Courtney, who is a birth worker and doula, mentioned that her great-grandmother was also a Black midwife in Central Virginia. It’s funny how memories get jogged even as we’re creating new ones. There she was, nurturing her own child as she has helped usher life into this world for so many other women.

I think I cried during this session because I realized the profound blessing it is to capture what is now, reflect on what was, and witness what is to come.

A little later it hit me: I’m not just a family photographer. I’m a legacy photographer.

I’m here for families who recognize the shoulders they stand on and are doing the work now to build a future for generations to come. With Generations Sessions, we bridge the divide between past, present, and future. We honor the hands that held us, celebrate the love that surrounds us now, and create visual bridges for the little ones who will carry our stories forward.

Legacy isn’t just about looking back. Legacy looks forward. It’s about intentionally creating moments today that will become tomorrow’s treasured memories.
