In November 2023, Impact Outdoors Executive Director Matthew Monjaras led youth hunters on a Sandhill Crane hunt at the Bernardo Wildlife Refuge. New Mexico Game and Fish requires all successful Sandhill crane hunters to report to a check-in site for data collection. New Mexico Game and Fish Bird Program Manager Mason Cline engages with youth during the collection of data after their hunt. Through a grant from the Outdoor Equity fund, Impact Outdoors created a first-time opportunity for New Mexico youth to participate as citizen monitors for this data collection.

NM Outdoor Recreation Division Black Mare Media

Last November Matthew Monjaras invited me/Black Mare Media to film an Impact Outdoors youth Sandhill Crane hunt. Hearing and seeing all the cranes and snow geese leaving their roost in the early morning was spectacular! So was seeing the young participants smile after they harvested their birds.

A twenty-minute video of the hunt will be available via YouTube on Wednesday.

Another short video of the kids measuring their birds with NM Game & Fish will be available next week.

The hunt was made possible by a Outdoor Equity Fund grant earned by Impact Outdoors through the NM Outdoor Recreation Division.

Over Labor Day Weekend, my husband and I made time to go back to his homeplace in Monument Valley. We spent two days putting mud on the hogan and received help from an unexpected group of visitors on the second day. It was wonderful to see family, eat good food, and meet new family and friends. ♥️
