Last Wednesday, families, advocates and community members gathered at the California State Capitol for the Annual Candlelight Vigil for Missing and Murdered Indigenous People (MMIP).

For many, it was not their first time standing on these steps calling for justice — and for some of the same families, the names they carried were the same as last year.

Speakers expressed encouragement at the turnout while describing ongoing frustrations with local law enforcement and a justice system that has repeatedly failed Indigenous communities.

The individual stories were devastating — many of them young people, many of them unsolved.

The evening included prayers, traditional chants and song — including the one you hear here.

Broken hearts. Not broken spirits.

The new issue of is out today with my coverage of the first match in the Pacific Four Series — world-class women’s rugby, a torrential Sacramento storm, and one of the most visibly q***r rosters in the sport right now.

Slides 1 and 2 are exclusives — Alev Kelter and captain Erica Jarrell-Searcy, two of my favorite shots from the match that didn’t make the paper.
