Wildlife photography from a kayak requires a completely different skill set than landscape work. You can't just paddle up and start shooting - you have to become part of the environment.
I was drifting quietly through the Cosumnes River Preserve wetlands when I spotted this Great Egret hunting in the shallows. These birds are elegant but skittish - one wrong move, one paddle splash, and they're gone. I had maybe a minute, probably less, before it would fly off.

Sure enough, I did get a bit too close.

Some evenings, everything aligns perfectly. I was out kayaking on the Cosumnes River as the sun began to set, and paddled into this scene as the golden light burst through the autumn colored trees. The perfectly calm water created flawless mirror reflections, doubling the golden foliage and capturing that dramatic sunburst in the still surface.

I captured this scene on the American River in Sacramento, where the fall foliage creates a natural mirror on the calm water. The arching tree trunk frames the composition, while scattered leaves drift on the surface, marking the gentle transition of seasons.

The Art of Slowing Down Time.
Same Ferris wheel. Same night.

When you photograph the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk at twilight with long exposures, every image becomes a unique piece of art.

For several mornings, I'd set my alarm early and stumble to the window in the pre-dawn darkness, checking conditions at Santa Cruz harbor. Each day, thick fog blanketed the coastline, and I'd crawl back into bed knowing it wasn't worth the drive to Walton Lighthouse.
But this morning looked different as I peered outβ€”the fog appeared to be lifting, hovering offshore rather than shrouding the coast. Still groggy but hopeful, I grabbed my gear and headed out into the early morning quiet.
I was rewarded with this breathtaking scene at Walton Lighthouse. The fog had retreated, leaving behind the most ethereal, moody atmosphere. The morning sunrise was painting beautiful light to the left, creating a magical glow that I knew I had to capture. Since I couldn't fit both the lighthouse and that gorgeous light in one frame, I created a mini panorama to preserve the full scope of this serene moment.

Title: Some Flower, Somewhere 😁

I'm not sure of the name of this flower or exactly where I took it, but I do like the center of it.

New angle, familiar icon! I've been to this spot by the Golden Gate a few times, and rather than just repeating old shots, I aimed for a new composition with these foreground elements. Curious to know if you like this approach!
