Church Rock rising out of the sagebrush near Monticello, another roadside stop that turned out to be worth the pull off on the way to Moab.

Twin Rocks towering over the trading post in Bluff, Utah. Another good reason to take your time on the drive between Page and Moab instead of just passing through.

Shot on an OM-1 Mark II with the Olympus M.12-40mm F2.8 lens at 15mm (30mm equivalent), f/2.8, 1/4000s, ISO 200.

Monument Valley showed up right on schedule on the drive from Page to Moab. Sometimes the best stops are the ones just off the highway with no plan required.

Glen Canyon Dam holding back the Colorado River, framed by the same red rock canyon that gave us the not-Antelope Canyon adventure we did not plan on having in Page.

Not Antelope Canyon, though it might fool you at first glance. This little slot near the Glen Canyon Dam overlook is only 10 to 15 feet tall, but a wide lens and the right angle make it feel much bigger. We ran out of time for the real thing, so this scratched the itch.

Never planned on stopping in Page, Arizona, until the car had other ideas. While we waited for repairs, we made the most of it with a sunrise hike to Horseshoe Bend. Sometimes the best shots come from the trip you did not plan.

Shot on an OM-1 Mark II with the Olympus M.12-40mm F2.8 lens at 12mm (24mm equivalent), f/5.6, 1/640s, ISO 200.

A few minutes after sunset at the same South Rim overlook, the canyon walls held onto that warm glow while the sky above turned cool blue.

A turkey vulture riding the thermals past a limestone butte at the Grand Canyon’s South Rim, dwarfed by the layers of red rock stretching out behind it.

Same evening, same overlook at the Grand Canyon’s South Rim, a few minutes before the sun broke through the clouds. Sometimes the wait for that perfect light is half the fun.

Shot on an OM-1 Mark II with the Olympus M.17mm F2.8 lens at 17mm (34mm equivalent), f/8, 1/320s, ISO 200.
