Here's what I've watched happen every fall for 25 years.

Families who book in September get the session they wanted. The light, the dates, the version of their kids that exists right now before another year changes them. They show up relaxed because they planned ahead.

Families who wait until October are working around what's left. The dates they wanted are gone. The light has shifted past its peak. They're making the best of it instead of getting what they came for.

I'm not saying this to create pressure. I'm saying it because I've seen it enough times to know it's true every single year without exception.

Most photographers working today have never seen a print come up in a developer tray.

The experience is genuinely difficult to describe to someone who hasn't been in a darkroom. You've made an exposure. You don't know yet whether it worked. You put the paper in the developer and you watch — and then, slowly, the image appears on paper that was blank thirty seconds ago. Not on a screen. On paper. Because of chemistry and light and a decision you made before you pressed the shutter.

That process changes how you think about photography. Not sentimentally — practically. You understand exposure differently when you've watched it fail in real time with no ability to fix it afterward. You understand light differently when you can't correct it in editing. You make better images because you've had to think more carefully about what you're actually doing.

The newborn stage feels long while you're inside it. The nights especially. It has a quality of endlessness that's hard to explain to anyone who hasn't been there — the weeks blur together, time stops behaving normally, and survival becomes the organizing principle of each day.

And then, faster than anyone warns you, it's over. The curled fists start reaching. The newborn sleep gives way to alert, opinionated wakefulness. The baby who fit against your chest in one arm is suddenly trying to climb furniture.

Simple images from those early weeks become anchors later — not because they're beautiful, but because they're specific. They show exactly who your baby was in those first days, before the world started shaping them into someone else.

That specificity is what makes them worth making.

The question I get most often from families before a session is some version of: what do we do? Where do we stand? How do we know what to do?

The honest answer is that you mostly already know. You've been figuring out how to exist together as a family for years. You have patterns — who stands where, who reaches for whom, how you naturally arrange yourselves when nobody is watching. My job isn't to replace those patterns with something more photogenic. It's to create enough space and enough quiet that those patterns show up on their own.

This family needed almost no direction. They moved around that truck the way people move around something that belongs to their story. That ease is visible in the image and it cannot be faked — not convincingly, not in a way that holds up over time.

The families who get the images they actually love are almost always the ones who stopped trying to perform and started just being there.

Film photography is having a genuine moment right now, and I think the reasons are worth understanding.

For people who have spent their entire lives producing and consuming digital images at volume, film offers something that feels increasingly rare: slowness, imperfection, and a physical relationship with the image-making process. A roll of 35mm gives you 36 exposures and no preview. That limitation produces intention. When each frame costs something — financially but more importantly cognitively — you engage with the scene differently.

I've been shooting film for 25 years, long before it became an aesthetic choice, and I have real things to teach about it. Not just the technical side — how to load a camera, how to think about exposure on film — but the experiential side. What changes about the way you see when you can't review your frames immediately.

Fall light in Minnesota has a specific quality that doesn't announce itself until it's almost gone.

I've watched this happen enough times to say it plainly: the families who wait until October to think about fall photos are almost always working around what's left rather than what they wanted. The dates are limited. The light has shifted. The particular window that made fall feel worth photographing has passed.

The families in this photograph planned ahead. They showed up when the light was still doing what fall light does at its best — low and even and specific in a way that Minnesota families recognize even if they can't always name it. Their kids look like they look right now. Next fall they'll look different.

That's the point of annual family photography. Not a special occasion. A record of who you were this year.

Most parents assume that because the newborn stage is so intense — so physically demanding, so emotionally all-consuming — they'll remember it clearly.

The intensity doesn't actually help memory. If anything it works against it. When you're that tired, that focused on survival, that deep in the logistics of keeping a small human alive, your brain isn't filing away details. It's managing the immediate.

What families lose isn't the feeling of that season. They keep that remarkably well. What they lose are the specifics — the exact scale of their baby in the first week, the particular expressions that existed for about three weeks before giving way to something new, the way their newborn fit in one arm before that became impossible.

Photographs fill those gaps. That's not a sentimental argument. It's a practical one.

Pregnancy moves faster than most people expect, and most people don't think about documenting it until they're already in the final stretch.

What I've observed over 25 years is that maternity images tend to grow in meaning over time rather than diminish. In the moment, the focus is on the logistics — the due date, the nursery, the gear. Later, when the baby is here and the pregnancy is a memory, families return to these images differently. They show their children. They remember how it felt to be in that particular season of becoming.

Maternity photography doesn't require you to feel beautiful or prepared. It requires showing up as you are — in the middle of something that won't look like this again.

Maternity sessions are one of the most underestimated parts of the family photography story.

Most families think about newborn photos. Fewer think about documenting the season just before — the anticipation, the physical reality of pregnancy, the specific version of themselves that exists only in this window.

That version passes quickly. Once the baby arrives everything shifts and the pregnancy stage becomes something that already happened.

Twin newborn sessions require patience that I've come to genuinely enjoy.

You can't rush two babies. You can't schedule around their needs — you follow them. When one settles the other might not. When both are finally still, you work quickly and quietly because that window is short.

What comes out of that patience is something that shows who these two were before they were anything else — before names had weight, before personalities had words, before they knew they were siblings in the fullest sense of that word.

They already had each other. That's what these images hold.
