As many are aware, Aurora out there for much of the USA this morning. Headed up north this morning. Sharing some of the photos I took, most of what I'm not sharing are getting set up and working out how long the lense needed to be open for. First image is a screen cap of the Aurora Coverage map as I got started Last look showed that the aurora coverage has moved a bit north of here. Probably more coming in with some of the other events comming up. There appears to be an X class flair as part of the storms in the cluster that this is the start of. Was probably already settlign out by the time I started taking pictures.

Hey folks, Rusty here. I'd like to get a small contest going starting in March. Every Friday, starting at noon (America/Chicago time zone) we start taking nomination photos for the contest.

Limit of 3 photos per event, with the stipulation that you may remove a photo to nominate another, as long as it has no 'likes' for it yet. However you must remove the earlier photo, not just submit a new photo saying this replaces photo such and such.

Each week there will be a 'topic' for the photos. So if the topic happens to be Cats, then a photo you take of your Angora, or a Bengal, or a feral, are all acceptable. Not so much your photo of a Dachshund, or the barn next door which probably has a cat inside the barn. The topic should be the driving factor of the photo.

Contest starts at Noon on Friday and runs to Midnight Sunday. Entries can be submitted through midnight Saturday night. Voting ends at midnight Sunday night.

You get up to 2 additional self support votes if your submission includes details you should be able to get from your image as you're preparing to post, such as what camera was used, what lens or focal length, shutter speed, f-stop, and ISO or film speed, as well as whether it was a digital or film photograph. that gets you one "like" even if no one has 'liked' the photo at the end of the contest. You get an additional virtual 'like' if you post how this photo has affected how you take pictures. That reason may have something to do with how hard it was to get that photo in the first place, or what you learned about a feature of your camera. It may be a personal story about what the specific subject of the photo means to you, or why you're never taking another photo like this again. Keep this to no more than 100 words.

Disqualifications. It is bad form to use other people's work. Expect that your submission will be used in a google image search. If there are matches that predate your submission that are from one of the stock photo companies, or in some sort of publication or business information, your submission will be disqualified. Even if you did shoot that photo, if you've submitted the photo to a stock photo company, or you posted it somewhere for publication, it's assumed that you are earning money for it, and/or someone else is going to be coming down on us for posts that they hold some variety of copyright over. That's not the law, just how we're treating it.

The contest may end in a tie or multi-way win. where 2 or more parties have the same number of a combination of likes, and up to 2 added points for image information and meaning.

Prize. There is no second, third or also-ran prizes. The Winner(s) have the option of choosing the topic for the next week's contest. Perks for that include images you choose to include may be considered for reference material for the contest. If there is more than one winner, the event runner will allow the winner's to work together to prepare the subject nomination and selection of up to 3 photos to include. Topic submission needs to be provided to the event runner no later than noon Thursday (24 hours before start of next contest) or the event runner will select a topic of their own choosing for the weekend.

I'd say that the following goes without saying, but I know that if it's not said, we'll have issues. Do not violate Facebook terms of service. No po*******hy, nudity (they are different) or photos to embarrass others, intentional or not.

This is to be a friendly contest. So the most important rule will be this one. Don't make Rusty (Or whomever takes over for Rusty when he steps away) make new rules. Oh, we'll eventually see new rules added. But each rule that gets added will have a name attached to it that references back to the person who made the rule be included. More than 2 of these rules will mean that the person who's name is attached to the rule is no longer allowed to submit photos, or comment on submissions.

Photos Rusty took during the 2018 Photo Walk, and a couple from after we took off, from the overlook of the Ford Plant Lock and Dam. Most of the photos are from around the North end of the Hidden Falls park in St. Paul, MN.

We've had a day of cooling that did not involve a significant piece of sever weather yesterday afternoon. Did you get out to get a picture of that wonderful day? Feel free to comment and post. We may see some severe weather later today though, If you do go out with a camera, make sure you do your photography safely.
