The city of Split, Croatia is on the coast and has had different cultural influences as contrasted to Zagreb. Split is on the coast and is built around Diocletian's Palace. It was a Roman military encampment and residence of Emperor Diocletian who was the last emperor to persecute Christians, and also had the honor of dying of natural causes. When he retired the palace was built. He was originally from the area something I have in common with the emperor. I was born there ages ago.

The bell tower of the Cathedral of St Domnius can be seen in the distance in the photo of the port. It was erected between 12th-16th centuries. The church was once the mausoleum of Emperor Diocletian. Now it dedicated to Saint Domnius, a bishop, who was one of Diocletian's victims. The Peristyle is next to the church. The architecture of the old is blended with the new. Diocletian's palace was built between 298-302 AD.

The central square in Zagreb is called the Ban Jelacic Square. "Ban" is the title of viceroy/governor. He abolished serfdom in Croatia in 1848 which made him a folk hero. The horse's legs supposedly tell how the rider died. If both front legs are raised, he died in battle. If one front leg is raised, he was wounded in battle, but died later. If all are on the ground, he died of natural causes. Ban Jelacic, despite the posture of the horse's legs, died of natural causes in 1859. It was thought that complications of tuberculosis and syphilis were the cause.

St Mark's church in Zagreb is a part of the old city. This Gothic masterpiece, renowned for its tiled roof featuring the coats of arms of Croatia, Dalmatia, Slavonia, and the city itself, is more than just a place of worship; it serves as a symbolic anchor for the nation's political identity. The church is situated in the core of the old city, a charming area with its cobblestone streets and medieval atmosphere. It also houses the seat of the Croatian government.

This is another urban setting, Zagreb, Croatia. This is the capitol city of Croatia. Not many people visit this part of Croatia. Most of the tourism is on the Adriatic coast. Zagreb is a lovey city that has a history spanning over a thousand years. It was once part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. After WWI it became part of Yugoslavia. After the Homeland War, between 1991-1995, it gained its independence. The architecture resembles that of central Europe. The costal areas have a strong Italian influence.

Here are more images of Brooklyn taken during walks. It was fun to visit, but I still prefer smaller communities that are not far from the countryside.

Brooklyn extends far beyond its iconic skylines, revealing a neighborhood where nature and urban life blend seamlessly. Prospect Park offers a tranquil escape with its winding paths and serene lakes. The sidewalks come alive with a diverse array of charming restaurants. Alongside the gastronomic delights, the area is dotted with other essential amenities that cater to daily life, creating a self-sufficient and vibrant community.

I will be stepping away from the computer for a while, so I'll be sharing photos from various trips. Brooklyn, New York, was a pleasant surprise. In the past, my visits were limited to Manhattan for medical conferences and work events. Manhattan feels noisy, dominated by overwhelming architecture, and lacks a sense of community. Brooklyn is the opposite. While it has tall buildings, it also offers neighborhood businesses, green spaces, and a vibrant street life filled with residents who call it home.

Despite my best efforts, no pot of gold was found. Cliché as it may be, who can resist a rainbow? When I lived in Salina, reaching the landscapes I loved to photograph was a short trip. The open countryside, with its vast sky and unobstructed horizon, deeply resonated with me. The landscape in Kansas City feels different, which perhaps explains my recent interest in photographing birds. Below is one of the photographs from a few years ago that I had set aside, for reasons unknown, but now have the time to revisit.

In the leisure of retirement, I have been sifting through old image folders and revisiting files I previously set aside. The "B" team is getting another look. During my working years, image processing was a late-night task, reserved for after the day's main work was done. Often, it was late, I was fatigued, yet I would stay up into the early morning hours to finish. Doing this work now is a true treat. It is the middle of the day, and fatigue is no longer a problem. My goal was to capture a moody sunset from Coronado Heights, as the light faded and darkness settled.
