Species: American kestrel / Falco sparverius

Fun fact: They have two dark spots on the back of their heads that look like eyes. These “false eyes” may help deter predators by making it seem like the kestrel is always watching.

Bull Elk in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Unfortunately, he seems to have some debris wrapped in his antlers, but thankfully didn't seem to slow him down.

Northern Harrier on a gloomy day.

Fun fact: This is one of the few bird species of raptors that regularly practices a behavior known as "sky-dancing." During the courtship display, male Northern Harriers perform an aerial dance, soaring and gliding through the sky while executing impressive acrobatic maneuvers. This mesmerizing sky dance involves dramatic twists, turns, and dives, making it a delightful spectacle to witness.

Common Grackle

Fun fact: A fun fact about the common grackle is that it has an incredible vocal range and is capable of imitating a wide variety of sounds. Grackles are known to mimic the calls of other bird species, as well as human noises like car alarms, sirens, and even the occasional word or phrase. This mimicry ability has earned them the nickname "nature's ventriloquists."
