Will San Antonio continue to harass migratory birds since contractors appear …well…not well trained! And would they know or care about the different group migrating through the city?

Fall migration is underway. Tonight’s BirdCast forecast shows the first waves already on the move, and numbers will rise quickly in the coming weeks.

Every window counts. Every light counts. Do your part by ensuring bird-safety practices are in place:

• Treat glass with Feather Friendly visual markers or Bird Divert UV markers
• Keep lights out at night.

Really disgusting that the Brackenridge Park conservancy used this for promoting their playground while approving the harassment of migratory Egrets, Herons and Cormorants.

Just a reminder, tonight will be an active night for the fall bird migration. BirdCast estimates that between 250-300 million birds will be in flight, with most activity in the eastern third of the country. You can help by turning off outdoor lights and minimizing light pollution. Birders may see some different birds stopping during the day this weekend.

Another plan to destroy wetland habitat!
This is Avenue A one of the few natural areas left that is located in Brackenridge park!

I suspect they will use a programmatic agreement signed years ago without complete plans.

Upstream from this crossing, is said to be where the Payaya Indians first met the Spaniards at the “1st People’s Paseo de Tejas” ford crossing

Several of you have heard the discussion about the idea of connecting that place across 281!
This area of trees and shrubs is a stopping point for migratory birds! The little ones, like warblers and rare ones Dwayne Flores always seems to find!

System Riverine (R) : The Riverine System includes all wetlands and deepwater habitats contained within a channel, with two exceptions: (1) wetlands dominated by trees, shrubs, persistent emergents, emergent mosses, or lichens, and (2) habitats with water containing ocean-derived salts of 0.5 ppt or greater. A channel is an open conduit either naturally or artificially created which periodically or continuously contains moving water, or which forms a connecting link between two bodies of standing water.

System Palustrine (P) : The Palustrine System includes all nontidal wetlands dominated by trees, shrubs, persistent emergents, emergent mosses or lichens, and all such wetlands that occur in tidal areas where salinity due to ocean-derived salts is below 0.5 ppt. It also includes wetlands lacking such vegetation, but with all of the following four characteristics: (1) area less than 8 ha (20 acres); (2) active wave-formed or bedrock shoreline features lacking; (3) water depth in the deepest part of basin less than 2.5 m (8.2 ft) at low water; and (4) salinity due to ocean-derived salts less than 0.5 ppt.

HOLY BIRDS! 🐦

Anyone else noticing WAY more birds the past few days?

Our major fall migrations have started, and Ohio is one of the hot spots for birds to stop and refuel along the way.

Just look at last night! Nearly 300 MILLION birds were in flight across the country early this morning, with a huge amount of migration traffic overhead in the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley.

Our yards are their pit stops — and there are things you can do to help:

-Turn off unnecessary outdoor lights at night. Many birds migrate after dark, and bright lights can disorient them.

-Make big windows visible. Screens, closely spaced decals or other markings can reduce window strikes.

-Plant native plants. Native trees, shrubs and flowers provide insects, fruit, seeds and places to rest.

-Provide clean water. A safe place to drink and bathe can be valuable during a long journey.

And a geeky weather note: these flocks can become so thick that weather radar has been detecting the birds flying overhead!

About 150-230M birds are predicted to migrate across the U.S. each night this weekend!

Lights at night can be very disorienting to birds during their long fall migration. To help prevent deadly bird collisions, turn off or dim unnecessary lights!
