Perfectionism is something I struggled with for years and sometimes it returns still. But it’s something that actually hurts your art rather than helping. We think if we try to make the most detailed, best painting, then our art will be good. But sometimes that creates the most boring or overworked art.

This is a painting in a sketchbook from 2024. Sometimes the simplest subjects can make a cool painting. Having a figure on the path probably would’ve improved it but when I painted this I wasn’t confident with paint figures into my landscapes yet. A lot has changed since then and I’m still working on trying to be more bold and take risks in my paintings now.

Lack of the best materials is just an excuse to not create. I started out with cheap paint, paper, and brushes. My first paintings weren’t the greatest but some of them did turn out quite well. It’s more about learning to use what you already have.
