I’m honored to have been dubbed a “HARLEY’S ANGEL” for the legendary automotive designer and innovator, Harley Earl, by his grandson, Richard Earl. In 2011, I met Richard and became fascinated with Harley after creating a series of videos about him from the Petersen Automotive Museum in Hollywood with Alan Taylor. Richard has made it his mission to tell his grandfather’s incredibly impactful story.
Most know Harley for creating the Corvette, or being the first man to hire a team of women who revolutionized car design efficiency and even improved safety measures. But his true impact, aside from the countless number of iconic stylings dating back to the early 1900s, doesn’t stop there. Even the military looked to his automotive practices and that of the GM Dream Team which ultimately helped in winning WWII.
Harley was so far ahead of his time, his innovations, leadership and business practices have been compared to the late Steve Jobs. Harley was a disruptor 70 years before it was cool. Don’t get me started on Harley’s impact of inventing automotive clay sculpting which is still used today.
