I See You
This mural by Skye Walker is hard to miss when you’re walking through Oceanside.
I made several photographs of it straight on, but then I walked a little farther down the street and spotted its reflection in a window across the way. That became the photograph I was really interested in.
The color version works well, but black and white changed the mood completely. Without the color competing for attention, my eye keeps coming back to the face, the window frame, and those eyes looking through the reflection.
This image was also accepted into the April 2026 exhibition.
Sometimes the better photograph appears after you think you’ve already found the shot.

Two photographs from my Scotland trip last year have found a temporary home at the Coronado Public Library.

I’m honored that “Angles of Old Town” and “Enduring Grace” were selected for Where We Wander, an exhibition featuring travel photography by members of the Darkroomers Photographic Club.

The exhibition is on view through November 1, with an Artists’ Reception on August 9 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM. Everyone is welcome.

All The Way To The Bay

There is no shortage of color beneath the Coronado Bridge in Chicano Park, but it was the relationship between the artwork and the structure that caught my attention here.

The words “All The Way To The Bay” follow the direction of the bridge, while the road sign above points forward between the converging overpasses.

Different elements, all leading the eye in the same direction.

This dahlia caught my eye because of its color.
It kept my attention because of its shape.
I photographed it in the competitive flower exhibit at the San Diego County Fair. While the color version is lovely, I found myself drawn back to the black and white edit. Without the color, the petals almost become abstract, and it's easy to get lost following each curve and swirl.
I'm honored that this image was also accepted into the Darkroomers July exhibition.
For the photographers out there, what makes you choose black and white over color? Are there certain subjects that naturally pull you toward monochrome, while others simply don't work without color?

Whenever I visit a beach with a pier, you'll probably find me underneath it with my camera.
I'm drawn to the symmetry, the interplay of light and shadow, and the unique architecture of each pier. Add waves crashing through the pilings and a colorful sunset, and I'm in no hurry to leave.
The Ocean Beach Pier has always intrigued me. Its distinctive T-shaped design makes it unlike any other pier in California. I've photographed it from both above and below over the years, and I'm glad I had the chance to walk its full length before it closed to foot traffic. It was a much longer walk than most people expect.
With the pier's future still uncertain, I don't take those experiences for granted. It's a reminder that even familiar landmarks aren't permanent. Every photograph captures a moment we'll never experience in quite the same way again.

Late last year, I had a thoughtful conversation with Jennifer Fink on the Fading Memories podcast.
