Within a short four-day trip, we packed our bags for the area of Mardin in Southeastern Turkey. The travelogue is now up on my website and stories detailing the food, places, and things to do in a part of Turkey infrequently visited by outsiders but now becoming a destination hard to miss.

Last weekend in Colorado, I made sure to catch up on consumption of cookies and cake. At Scrumptious Ice Cream in Arvada, punk metal blasted through the speakers. I asked how many scoops in a large, and the man replied, “we don’t do scoops here.” Life can be dangerous at these parlors, but it was worth the risk. As you move east in the state, the land becomes flatter and flatter. What you miss in mountains, you gain in infinite horizons that stretch directly into the sun.

As the train bent itself nearly in two, I wedged an arm and a body against the window glass. Along the The Flåm Railway in Norway, valleys and mountains move up and down holding houses built of wood atop their hems. As I leaned farther and farther out of the window, my camera dangled perilously over the sheer edge of the tracks. Even though a short historic train ride, it packs plenty of views.

I stood last winter on the quays of Karaköy overlooking the Bosphorus. At the end of the nineteenth-century, Karaköy was at the heart of banking and finance for the Ottoman Empire. Gentleman dressed alafranga — “like the French” — in two-piece woolen suits and scarlet fezzes would scuttle along the newly widened avenues. In the twentieth-century, the area saw rapid decline. The banks closed and moved elsewhere. The elegant shops shuttered their doors. I would wander the narrow streets in the 90s and early aughts and encounter twisted roads lined with mechanics, repair shops, and mongers of miscellany. The area was home to many brothels, which still linger in certain spots. Like most cities, by the twenty-first century, the popularity of urban areas rose dramatically: businesses and residents flocked to the district. The quays were renovated and industrial legacies washed away. Today Karaköy is one of the trendiest neighborhoods in İstanbul — glittering once again as a pearl along the Bosphorus.

The stillness of one feeds the tumult of the other.

The coastline of the island of Salina off Sicily. The islands here were formed from volcanic material, and their colors expose the magnificent variations of “black” that can occur in the ash.

This is the only time I’ve reposted the same photo, but looking at it, I see even more color than before, and I couldn’t resist.

As I’ve begun exhausting activities I know how to do at home, I’m moving onto topics for which I have no experience: clothes mending (spent one hour ordering thread), upholstery cleaning (I’ve made it worse than better), wet stone knife sharpening (both hands cut now), and using houseparty (what is an Eye-Pad?).

I am about to begin tossing all my plates, knives, forks, and bowls, since it’s settled: all meals henceforth will be eaten with a spoon directly from the jar, pint, container, cardboard vessel, &c. In such riotous mirth I find myself. I am also discarding of my onerous dining table and chairs as the bed has become the only piece of furniture I use.

Current view from my apartment in downtown San Francisco; it’s amazing how much nature has healed. If you squint, you can see the Golden Gate Bridge in the distance.

I’ve swapped the pastries for the pickles: container after container is filled with brine and vegetables ready to be “cooked.” In only a few hours, the first items will be ready, which are slowly infused with such ingredients — names I am only now learning — like takanotsume pepper, Okinawan brown sugar from the island of Hateruma, and dark roasted golden sesame oil.

To my imaginary friend: I kindly ask you stop hogging the bathroom in the morning, leaving your dishes in the sink, piling the laundry to mountainous proportions, and walking around the house without pants on. It’s really quite unbecoming.
