I’ve been saying for 1 year that I’m going to bring contact improv to Laguna Beach since there isn’t any in all of Orange County! So here we go…

Open to all levels. Great for beginners.

What is contact improv?
An experimental dance form started in the 70’s that uses improvisation to move together with another body (or bodies). We will explore different techniques like gravity, weight sharing, using the floor, spirals, listening, leading, momentum, and so much more…

No dance experience necessary, just a willingness to get in your body and be present!

Then she pulled out a machete and started cutting her long hair. Bit by bit her hair rolled through the sand like tumbleweeds. What it was she was letting go of I’m not sure but I’m not sure that it even matters. My favorite was the one where her arm was the same as her sculpture’s… mimicking her ancestors shapes.

She said she wanted sand to be incorporated in the shoot so that it would look like the figures were emerging from the earth. So I found us some sand dunes and we drove, me from Southern California, her from Northern California, and met in the desert in between us. Here we carried her 3 ceramic sculptures over the dunes, one heavy step at a time, as if carrying the weight of your ancestors on your back. I helped her but she mostly carried them herself since they weee created from her hands and she knew exactly how to hold them. And we placed them in the sand, herself emerging as one of them but this one in flesh and blood.

Sometimes I get to make a portrait without the pressure of selling a product or representing a brand, but just for the sake of capturing a person. I haven’t been shooting as much lately because I’m very present with the experience of raising a son, so getting to shoot Juan Carlos reminded me how much I still love playing with unplanned spontaneity and observing a person in front of me. When I feel easy about a shoot is usually when the magic happens. Which one is your favorite ( #1-6)?
