We did NOT expect to see this on Highway 1 🤯

We always associate Highway 1 with crashing waves and rugged cliffs. But just north of the Elephant Seal Rookery, we spotted two bald eagles hanging out in a marshy meadow, and one took off right in front of us. 🦅

So naturally we had to look in to this. Apparently Bald eagles were once nearly wiped out in California due to DDT contamination (pesticides) in the mid-1900s. After decades of protection and reintroduction efforts, their populations have steadily rebounded, and they’re now expanding into areas along the Central Coast.

They’re typically drawn to:
💦 Wetlands
🌊 Rivers and reservoirs
🌊 Coastal estuaries
🐟 Areas with abundant fish and waterfowl

Which makes this stretch of coastline more than just a scenic drive, it’s prime habitat.

Next time you’re driving along Highway 1 near San Simeon… don’t just watch the ocean. 🌊

Look inland. 🔍

Have you ever spotted bald eagles on the Central Coast?👇🏼

*****

Other areas to potentially spot bald eagles:
🦅 Morro Bay
🦅 Moss Landing
🦅 Tomales Bay
🦅 Klamath River
🦅 Channel Islands

Look inland near freshwater sources, rivers, estuaries, wetlands, and lakes, not just the ocean cliffs.

Organizations to check out:

| If you’re planning trips this year, this is one promo you actually want to know about.👇🏼

Ryan’s been a World of Hyatt loyalist since 2017, so when launched Bonus Journeys, it immediately became part of how we’re planning travel. World of Hyatt members who register can earn 3,000 Bonus Points for every three eligible nights (up to 21,000 Bonus Points at Hyatt hotels worldwide!), turning the stays we’re booking now into free nights, upgrades, and experiences later.

This is how we’ve learned to travel smarter — choosing stays we already love and letting the points stack toward what’s next.

👉🏼 Pro tip: If you’re a World of Hyatt Credit Card member, you can earn an extra 1,000 Bonus Points for every three eligible nights at select hotels — on top of the Bonus Journeys points. We have both the personal and business cards, so this is how we stack even more value on stays we’re already booking.

So if you're looking for places to stay this year, comment "HYATT" and we'll show you the way! 👇🏼

Terms apply.

Get all the details for experiencing Firefall! 👇🏼

🔥 Yosemite Firefall is here — here’s what to know before you go:

💬 Comment “FIREFALL” and we’ll send you our full guide with the best viewing areas, timing tips, and how to experience Firefall responsibly while helping protect Yosemite. 🔥🌲

Each February, if conditions line up just right, the setting sun hits Horsetail Fall at the perfect angle, making the waterfall glow bright orange as if it’s on fire. It’s one of Yosemite’s most iconic natural events — and it only lasts a few minutes per night. 🔥💦

There are no reservations required to enter the park this year, but Firefall still takes planning and patience. Expect heavy crowds near El Capitan, limited parking, long walks, and very limited services and staffing during this time.

If you’re hoping to experience it:
⏰ Arrive early and be prepared to wait
🥾 Expect to walk significant distances if parking fills
⚠️ Stay on designated paths and respect closures
🚮 Pack out all trash and be patient with park staff
🌨️ Know that weather, snowpack, and water flow determine whether it happens at all

Firefall is never guaranteed — clouds, low water flow, or the wrong sun angle can cancel it completely. Going in with the right expectations makes the experience far more rewarding.

💬 Comment “FIREFALL” and we’ll send you our full guide with everything you need to know to experience this incredible phenomenon!
