Summer swim & dive season looks a whole lot like sunshine, wet hair, and this kind of smile. So much fun to capture these little moments that make the season feel so special.

Celebrating this beautiful senior and all the light she carries into the world. Her kindness, her faith, her steady spirit, it all shines in every frame. Grateful I could document this moment in her journey as she steps into a new season with purpose and grace.

This mini-senior session was so special to me. I’ve known Ivey since she was just two years old, and watching her grow into the incredible young woman she is today has been an absolute joy. She is kind, talented, and full of grace—everything her parents could be proud of and more.

It’s always an honor to capture these milestones, but when it’s someone who feels like family, it means even more. Congratulations, Ivey—your future is as bright as your spirit! 💫🎓

📷 Let’s Talk About Pricing 📷
If you’ve ever wondered why one photographer charges $300 while another charges $3,000 for a session, the answer isn’t just about experience—it’s about what it actually takes to run a photography business and earn a living wage.

A lot of new photographers start with low pricing, and honestly, we’ve all been there (and sometimes still forced to be there)! It feels like the best way to attract clients and gain experience. But here’s the thing—when sessions are priced too low, it doesn’t just affect the photographer. It impacts the whole industry.

--> How Low Pricing Changes the Game
📷 Clients get used to bargain pricing – Which is great at first, until they expect professional work for hobbyist prices.
📷 Experienced photographers struggle to compete – Those who price sustainably to cover gear, editing time, and business costs often get undercut.
📷 Burnout happens fast – Many new photographers don’t realize how much time goes into planning, shooting, editing, and delivering a session. At $300 per session, they may end up making less than minimum wage after expenses.

--> What About a Living Wage?
The reality is that photography is a business, and just like any other profession, photographers need to earn a wage that covers:
📷 Basic living expenses (housing, food, healthcare, etc.)
📷 Business costs (gear, software, insurance, marketing)
📷 Taxes and retirement savings (because self-employed photographers don’t get benefits!)

If a photographer charges $300 for a session and spends 10+ hours on the process, that’s only $30/hour before expenses—which quickly drops once you factor in everything else. To run a sustainable business, creatives need to charge in a way that allows them to thrive—not just survive.

--> So What’s the Answer?
It’s not about blaming new photographers , but about understanding the true value of creative work. When photographers price with in mind, it benefits both the industry and the clients who want high-quality, long-lasting images.

At the end of the day, we all want to do what we love without burning out or going broke.

If you’re a photographer, what helped you figure out your pricing?

And if you’re a client, did you ever realize how much goes into a single session?

As I prepare to step into my 8th year of photography, I’ve been reflecting on the journey so far. Over the years, I’ve poured my heart into perfecting the art of portrait work, often being my own toughest critic. There were many moments when I doubted whether my work was good enough.

But today, as I clean out old photo files, a deep sense of gratitude washes over me. Looking back, I see the true beauty I’ve had the privilege of capturing—each image a moment in time, a glimpse into the lives of the incredible people I’ve photographed.

This realization comes at the perfect time as I begin another year of shooting school photos. The positive, innocent, and sweet energy of the kids I photograph brings me so much joy. They fill me with life and remind me to stay present with my own children because, as Henri Cartier-Bresson said, "Life is once. Forever."

Thank you to everyone who has been a part of this journey with me. Here’s to capturing more beautiful moments in the year ahead.

As the school year comes to a close, I want to extend my warmest wishes to all the wonderful families I've had the privilege to photograph. Seeing your children's smiles and capturing their precious moments fills my heart with joy. They remind me to slow down and appreciate my own kids, cherishing every moment because time moves too fast.

Thank you for letting me be a part of your lives. Have an amazing summer filled with laughter, love, and unforgettable memories. Remember, the days may be long, but the years are short. Enjoy every second.

With heartfelt gratitude,

Michele Noma🌞📸 ❤️

Every opportunity to shoot is an opportunity to learn. Sports photos aren't my niche. I shoot my kids' swim teams - both club and summer team. When I shoot club team, it's all from the stands so I have to rely on 1) my seating position in the stands; and 2) a telephoto lens for close-ups. For summer swim, I can shoot from the deck which allows for better close-ups, but I have to be cautious not to fall in the water while walking to get the shot while I navigate all of the spectators on small pool decks.

I recently had an opportunity to shoot the Brenau University Swimming Team (Women's) which was a different experience all around. I got to shoot on deck - bonus! But these meets are much faster. And there are rules about where I can position myself because I can't shoot from behind the blocks or block the judges' line of sight. It was foreign, but it was new and it was exciting!

One thing I've learned from shooting swim meets is that after a while all of the stroke shots start to look the same. The water splashes may change, but the strokes and angles are the same. What does change and is most defining about the swimmers is how they finish. The looks of defeat, the look of pride, and the high-fives they share with their teammates, competitors, and coaches. These are the most defining moments of these events.
