I used to chase the view — the overlook, the wide horizon, the recognizable scene. I still love those moments. But increasingly, I’m drawn to what happens when I slow down and stay longer. These photographs from Escalante came from paying attention to smaller gestures: stone resting, wood drifting.

The landscape hasn’t changed — only the way I’m listening.

Spent the weekend immersed in the night with Todd Hido at the Los Angeles Center of Photography workshop "Into the Night."

Deeply inspiring to hear Todd speak about atmosphere, ambiguity, and letting photographs hold unanswered questions. I made this image during the workshop—drawn to the tension between illumination and obstruction, invitation and distance.

Grateful for the insight, the conversations, and the reminder that mood and restraint often carry more weight than explanation.

I’m honored that my image from Ghosts in the Glass has been chosen by the LensCulture editors for the 2026 Art Photography Awards Competition Gallery. This series continues to be one of my most personal explorations of memory, architecture, and the way light reveals what time has left behind.

I’m delighted to share that Ghosts in the Glass is featured in the November issue of Novum Artis.

This project explores reflection, memory, and transformation at the historic Mare Island Naval Shipyard — a place where history still lingers in glass and shadow. The article includes two images from the series and an excerpt from my artist statement.

I’m deeply grateful to the editors of Novum Artis for the thoughtful presentation, and to everyone who continues to follow this journey through photography and place.

You can see the full feature and learn more about the work at davidwelchphotographicarts.org.

From my National Parks Photographic Expedition workshop at Capitol Reef National Park () — this image explores the intersection of representation and abstraction through intentional camera movement (ICM) and multiple exposure.

I’ve been drawn lately to move beyond traditional landscape photography — to interpret the land not only as a place, but as an emotional experience. The striations and colors of Capitol Reef’s canyon walls felt alive, vibrating with history, erosion, and memory.

This piece reflects that shift — from documentation toward expression, from what is seen to what is felt.

I’m honored to have two of my images — Garden Bench and Speed — featured in the October 2025 issue of ICM Photography Magazine, alongside the talented photographers from the Santa Fe Workshops class “Art of Abstract Photography.”

This workshop, led by instructors whose vision and approach deeply resonated with me, marked a pivotal step in my creative evolution. It encouraged me to move beyond purely representational landscapes and explore more expressive, abstract, and emotive interpretations of the world around me.

The experience also reinforced how important it is to keep experimenting — to stay curious and open to new ways of seeing.

You can explore the issue (released October 15) or subscribe at www.icmphotomag.com.

What a wonderful evening at the opening of Reminiscence at Edgewater Gallery in Ft. Bragg. The curators did a beautiful job shaping an exhibition that truly reflected the theme. It was a pleasure to meet visitors, fellow artists, and to see my work on the gallery walls.

If you’re near Ft. Bragg, I encourage you to stop by — the town is full of vibrant galleries, music, and eateries. I’ll definitely be returning!

I’m excited to share that two of my photographs—Breakup and Fading Memories—have been selected for Reminiscence, a national juried exhibition at Edgewater Gallery in Fort Bragg, CA.

Reminiscence invites artists to reflect on memory in all its forms—personal, familial, abstract, and collective. The exhibition embraces works that explore how we carry forward fragments of the past through imagery, texture, and storytelling.

The jurors for this exhibition are Esther Siegel and Spencer Brewer, two Northern California assemblage artists whose practice transforms found and archival materials into powerful visual narratives. I am honored that my work will be included in this exhibition.

A few years ago, we retraced the historic 1920 Park-to-Park Highway—the inaugural tour that first connected all twelve National Parks in the American West. One of the highlights was our first visit to Mesa Verde National Park, a designated Dark Sky Park.

From our campground, I captured this image of the Milky Way. Though I’m not a seasoned astrophotographer, it remains one of my most memorable moments behind the camera. The park has since featured this photograph in their own promotions—a true honor.
