“Soo Locks”
For the past 170 years, the Soo Locks have bridged the 21-foot drop between Lake Superior and Lake Huron, enabling massive freighters to transport raw materials and goods throughout the Great Lakes region. Regarded as the "lynchpin of the Great Lakes," the locks handle between 7,000 and 10,000 vessel transits during their nine-month shipping season. The Department of Homeland Security estimates that an unexpected six-month closure of the locks would devastate the U.S. economy, resulting in $1 trillion in economic losses. Beyond their economic impact, the locks are an engineering marvel; the entire system relies purely on gravity and does not utilize a single water pump. Instead, massive underground valves open and close to allow water to flow naturally from Lake Superior, raising or lowering transiting vessels and cycling up to 22 million gallons of water in just 15 to 20 minutes.

“Square Tower House”
Known as one of the best-preserved cliff dwellings in all of Mesa Verde National Park, Square Tower House demonstrates remarkable engineering skill for a structure built more than 700 years ago without modern tools. Builders utilized shaped sandstone blocks, mud mortar, and wooden roof beams to create a living space with more than 80 rooms. Although Mesa Verde was ultimately abandoned around 1300 CE, Square Tower House was rediscovered by Euro-American settlers in the 1800s.

"The Knife Edge"
Built in 1956, the Montezuma Valley Overlook is located at the southern end of the abandoned Knife Edge Road, which was originally part of the main route through Mesa Verde National Park. Knife Edge Road offered incredible views of Cortez and the surrounding Montezuma Valley but was ultimately circumvented with the creation of the Morefield–Prater Canyon Bypass, completed in 1914.

The road’s extremely narrow width and steep grade created instability in many areas, making it mostly suitable for wagon and horse travel. Knife Edge Road was reopened for a short period in the early 1920s, until the completion of the Morefield–Prater Tunnel in 1957.
