Three years ago, I came across a Cedar Bend Humane Society, Inc. Facebook ad that was promoting a Halloween sale on black and orange kittens. Weeks before, I had thought about welcoming a new furry member to the crew and felt that this was a literal virtual sign. Before I knew it, I put the shelter’s address in my phone, got in my car and was on my way to become a parent!
When I decided to adopt Sullivan (Sully for short), I was under the impression that I had gotten a cat. Weeks later, I discovered I actually got a cat who thinks he is a dog. I have tried introducing him to his own kind, but he’s not a huge fan and prefers to be one of the dogs. What can you do? 🤷♀️
I am beyond happy that this hilarious sweet boy is a part of my life. I may not know his exact birthday, but am glad Gotcha Days exist so we can celebrate together with pup and cat cakes!
Huge shout out to my sister-in-law (who is also the mover and shaker at The Buttercream Bakery Cupcakes & Cakes) for making those! The doggos and Sully loved them!
I wanted to share Sully’s Gotcha Day with you all to help spread awareness on the importance of being open to adopting animals with black fur. Research has indicated that animals with black fur take longer to be adopted and end up getting euthanized as a result depending on the shelter they are at.
When looking for animals, a lot of people are focused on the color of fur and overlook all the great qualities and personality traits animals have to offer. Some choose not to adopt an animal with black fur because of superstitions, they are harder to photograph, or people have heard animals with black fur are more aggressive.
I would just like to say that:
1. Fur color does not determine an animal's temperament. If anything, their environment and how people treat them does.
2. I am a photographer and every animal I have photographed with black fur is beautiful and adorable just like any other animal.
3. The only “bad luck” you will receive is not getting the opportunity to be unconditionally loved by an amazing animal/support system that happens to have black fur.
When you are looking to add an animal to your family, I highly recommend visiting your local shelter and I encourage you to not judge your options based on fur color and unsupported facts.
Don’t miss your chance to find your Sullivan. ❤️
