A Day In The Life Of A DJ…
I am blessed to have some creative friends and an awesome social community. So recently, I took the opportunity to follow Marcus to a few live DJ events. The images here are my attempt to show a bit of his process on the day and the excitement of the crowd. These photos were taken at two different venues with different techniques. One was a rooftop bar, and the other was a beach bar just after sunset. Thanks to NEXA Events for putting on a great party!

I joined someone else's Photowalk for a change. It's nice to take a break from organizing things every now and then. I was able to focus on my camera and the scene around me and less on socializing with the other photographers (until later on). We went to Chowrasta market and I got a few decent shots. Markets can be "all the same" after a while, but I never grow tired of the people you find there!
Thanks to Street_Shutters.pg (on IG) for organizing that. I enjoyed it quite a bit!

"I’m gonna lay down my heavy load, down by the riverside, down by the riverside, down by the riverside
I’m gonna lay down my heavy load, down by the riverside and I ain’t a gonna study war no more..."

I was reminded of this old song this weekend as a diverse group of my fellow humans all gathered at this beautiful spot on the Sedim River. We enjoyed the sights and sounds of the forest canopy from high up in a suspended Tree Top Walk, and followed that up with swimming and riverside BBQ. What a beautiful sight it was to see everyone enjoy themselves in the lush natural paradise! I feel blessed indeed to be a part of this lovely and strange community!

In these troubling times, it's a rare chance we get to come together, lay down our troubles by the riverside, and study war no more!

Woman’s Day 6K Andaman Island:
Last Sunday, a group of people got together to Run/Walk on a 6K loop from Straights Quay to the Gurney round-a-bout. This route utilized the newly developed Andaman Island.
While a lot of this reclaimed island is still under heavy development, the sections of road and bridges that the runners traversed were in pristine condition. The views of sunrise caught several runners off guard and they momentarily abandoned their running goals to capture the orange ball of fire rising over the water.
It was great to once again be immersed in this culture of active people that came together for a good cause. Special thanks to my friend Mayor Antony for the friendly chat, as I seem to photograph him a lot these days. He’s truly a humble acting leader and a great person. The Chief Minister of Penang and several notable YB’s were on hand as well to show their support for equal rights of women and a general need to keep our community active! Congrats to all that got out there and completed the event!

In full disclosure, I am an uninformed foreigner (Mat Saleh) living in a very interesting and sometimes confusing land. That said, I was honored to be invited as a guest to this event. In hindsight, I probably should have looked up exactly who some of the VIPs in attendance were ahead of time.
As I later learned, the main guest of honor was Tuan Yang Terutama Tun Dato’ Seri Utama Ramli Ngah Talib, the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Pulau Pinang (often translated in English as the Governor of Penang), together with Toh Puan Dato’ Seri Utama Raja Noora Ashikin binti Raja Abdullah. Penang does not have a Sultan, so the Yang di-Pertua Negeri serves as the ceremonial Head of State for the state.
The event itself, as described to me by my friend Dato Lawrence from PAWE Jelutong:
We were delighted to come together and be part of a historic and auspicious occasion — the Official Visit by TYT Yang di-Pertua Negeri Pulau Pinang, Tun Dato’ Seri Utama Ramli Ngah Talib, accompanied by Toh Puan Dato’ Seri Utama Raja Noora Ashikin binti Raja Abdullah, to the Golden Hope PAWE Jelutong Seniors Activity Centre.
This marked the first time Their Excellencies have visited the premises since the centre’s establishment just one year ago — a truly proud and memorable milestone for everyone involved.
Established only a year ago, the centre has already grown into a vibrant multi-racial family of over 700 members and today stands as one of the most active senior NGOs in Penang. As a Federal Government-linked initiative, the centre focuses on engaging, reconnecting, and providing a joyful platform for seniors to live life to the fullest during their golden years.
The centre has also been nominated in support of Penang’s WHO Age-Friendly City aspiration and serves as a one-stop hub offering a wide range of indoor and outdoor activities under one roof.
The photographs included here were my attempt to document some moments from the morning’s events.

As Chinese New Year approaches (or Lunar New Year if you prefer), the topic of “Prosperity” comes up a lot. As someone who didn’t grow up celebrating this holiday, I am curious about the traditions and how they compare to the modern day. Recently I learned that in some Cantonese-speaking communities it was custom for beggars and poor individuals to make the rounds during the second day of Chinese New Year. They would go to more wealthy households and shout 'Cai Shen dao!' (The God of Wealth has come!), to which the households would then bless them with “lucky money”. This (simplified) historic tradition is still carried out in modern times, but in different ways.
I was recently invited to come document a charity event sponsored by Lions Club International, the PAWE organization, and other local groups. Their goal was to give fresh veggies, food items, and other household essentials to low income families. What I witnessed was both beautiful and a bit heartbreaking. The scale of need in today’s economic duality was apparent. The turnout was overwhelming, which serves as a powerful reminder of how many families are quietly struggling.
Witnessing people's anxiety about feeling “food insecure” is a stark contrast to the commercial messaging of “prosperity” this time of year. So many of the ads in my feed suggest I need this or that to increase my prosperity, but this event reminded me of how fortunate I really am. I suspect that many of us live in this middle ground of feeling like we wished we had more, but we also realize that we could be doing worse.
What I experienced was beautiful as a whole. While the first few moments felt a bit chaotic, everyone was smiling by the time they made it to the end of the line as they left with things they needed and an Ang Pau.
I must admit that I hesitated to share some of these images because while everyone was taking photos and I was highly visible in my efforts to document the event, I also don’t wish to infringe on people who are coming to accept these donations. I am sharing this collection of photos in an effort to highlight the act of service and charity itself. My hope is that my photos of events like this inspire you, the viewer, to give of yourself, your time, and make donations when you can for those who are struggling in difficult economic times. Don’t do this because you think that this will bring you “luck” or “prosperity”, but because it’s the right thing to do. Random acts of kindness are their own reward.

Thaipusam 2026! This year’s festivities saw another million people come to a small island to climb the steps of the waterfall temple. As always, the sea of smiling faces and vivid colors is a delight to behold and irresistible for photographers. I am already looking forward to next year and thinking I might need to experience the holiday in KL as I am told they also “Go Big” for Thaipusam at the Batu Caves. Let’s see where I am a year from now. Anything is possible!

I found out that there was this Christmas Pet Fashion Show happening, and I couldn't pass up the chance to check it out. As if these critters weren't cute enough already, for this event their 'parents' dressed them up from nose to tail in different holiday decor. I wonder if animals feel embarrassment? hahaha
It was a great fair with all types of pet related booths and lots of tasty treats for humans as well. Even though the dogs were pretty cute, the Leopard Tortoise was probably my favorite animal in the show. I guess the judges didn't feel the same, because the top three spots went to the dogs.

I went to check out the “1000 Tiny Artworks” at a local exhibition recently. There I got to meet one of the artists who was actually the friend of a friend (Mohammad Nasrullah Bin Zulkifli - aka Moe!). In addition to trying to capture some of these miniature collections of art, I also spent some time with them walking around to enjoy the local street scenes. These photos were some of my personal favorites.
You can also check out the art of Gabriel at: https://www.instagram.com/gabrielcheahnnnn
Thanks to Red Hong Yi for putting this exhibit together, I think a lot of people really enjoyed it!
