Homeschool Sessions are my Favorites!

04/20/2026

One thing I really love about being a photographer is that I get to be a part of some really special moments…. This session was no exception. Addie and I were privileged to be part of a surprise proposal for one of her old gymnastics coaches! We’ve known Bryce for a really long time and I even sang in a choir with him in high school.

Congratulations!!

The first day of photos for Tutu School are done and I am so happy with how they came out! I was even able to add in a little extra magic fairy dust on a few and I loved it!

I was putting together one of my random rants where I suddenly had a lot to say, and then I realized it was waaaaaay too much for one post. So, I’m going to do a mini series with this one.

I’ve been told I am “too much” since I was a child. Too loud. Too opinionated. Too emotional. Has that toned down any of what I am? No. Even if it sometimes bothered me in the past, I have and will continue to be my fullest self.

I’ve realized that this whole idea of being "too much" runs deep into how I approach photography, too. I embrace rules and follow them strictly, but the way I apply those rules is what makes the work mine.

A photographer's style is so much more than just the colors or the pretty edits. Honestly, that's the shallow end of the pool. So many pieces play a part in determining what the final images say and how they feel.

Think of it like our Photographer DNA. Every detail, every choice, every instinct—from the way we light a scene to the places we choose to shoot—comes together to create a unique feeling and message. It's like our genetic code; the unique combination is what makes a photographers style, rather than one specific thing.

The message I strive to show in my work is one of honesty. But not just the surface kind of honesty. I want the type that is so true it can’t hide anymore—it has to burst out of you. I want to capture the wild, true core of you—the part society tries to squeeze into a neat little mold. Because guess what? Those are your best parts!

There is a lot I want say about all the things that make a photographer's work different. Like posing, time of day, movement, and editing. But next week I’m going to start with location and why it’s never “just” a backdrop.

In the meantime….What's one thing you think makes a photographer's style unique?

Every photographer has a couple little things that can instantly make someone a favorite client… One of mine is when they tell me they love black and white images ♥️

This shot was from before sunset actually started, but it felt so much like the ending to sound of music I braved the harsh sunlight for it!
I am the first person to shout from the rooftops how important the correct and best lighting is…. But sometimes I have to break even my own rules 🤪

We drove 3 hours away for this, and then started shooting too early because I worried the sun would set and we wouldn’t have any light. But then we waited. (I paced back and forth muttering about the sun trying to find the best angles and probably looked a little crazy 🤪 ) but it was 1000% worth it for this light 😍

If you’ve been wondering if driving out 1 hour, 2 hours, or even 4 hours away is really worth it, this is your sign. Yes. Yes it’s worth it. Make a trip of it and maybe even camp near your photo spot so you don’t have to drive in the dark! But making the trek to epic locations is always going to worth it.

Tell me what locations have you always wanted to do your family photos at so I can add them to my list!

I’ve been using my current edit since Aug of 2021, and I thought it might be fun to look back and compare my edits through time!

I don’t actually know what years I used each edit, but since I kept the preset saved I can at least see how my style has evolved! The images move backwards and start with my current preset and end with the first preset I started to find my vibe with.
