Every once in a while, you capture an image that looks equally captivating in color as well as it does in black and white. For me, “Zazzy Zinnia” is one such image of mine that I believe accomplishes that feat.

Utilizing the method of focus stacking, this single image consists of 83 separate images that have been precisely focused and finely tuned on small specific areas of the flower. These multiple images are then aligned and blended together to offer you the utmost clarity in showcasing a zinnia’s resilience and its ability to persevere.

If you happen to stop in the Fine Arts building at the Missouri State Fair, don't forget to cast a vote for your favorite art piece. The magic of sunsets on the ocean is that they seem to be boundless! With the wide-open water stretching out to an endless horizon, it makes the world feel huge and open as you’re held in wonderment. As the sun made its descent to signal the end of another day on the Na Pali coast, its fading light gifted me with an enormous palette of colors as the waves pushed gently onto the shore. Sometimes, all you have to do is stop and pause to let nature enchant you.

Even though “Zazzy Zinnia” wasn’t selected for the Missouri Top 50 Exhibition, it will also be available to see at the 2026 Missouri State Fair. This piece will be downstairs at the Fine Arts building in the Professional Division. It will be a 24” x 36” metal print which really makes the image “pop” and will definitely catch your eye!

I was fortunate to once again be selected for the Missouri Top 50 Competition at the 2026 Missouri State Fair. My image that was selected is titled "Double Diamond Dandy" that I captured during the "Great North American Eclipse" which took place in 2024. It showcases the rare phenomenon of a double diamond ring near the end of totality.

So if you should find yourself at the Fair, make sure to stop in the air conditioned Fine Arts building and take the elevator to the second floor. There is where you will see all kinds of incredible art that was juried in for this incredible show. Mine will be a 30" x 30" metal print so you can't miss it!

Nature doesn’t require any extra help from me to be captivating, which is why I keep my editing to a minimum. I strive to get the shot “right” in the camera to begin with so whatever image of mine you see, is really how that scene looked at that specific moment in time when I snapped the shutter. Although I perform black and white conversions because I’ve always loved the impact they generate, I still enjoy experimenting with other styles and techniques, if only for my own enjoyment. Every once in a while though, something gets created that really stands on its own



This image of the monkey pod trees on Oahu is one such example. Even though the original version is aesthetically pleasing, the smaller and thinner branches seemed to get lost in the foliage. By using an infrared conversion then adjusting other levels, those once obscure branches can now share the stage with the much bigger stars of the show. Even though this may not appeal to everyone, I feel it creates a visually intriguing piece that truly showcases the uniqueness of the monkey pod trees.

“To be like the rock that the waves keep crashing over. It stands unmoved and the raging of the sea falls still around it.” - Marcus Aurelius

Hoping to capture a shot of a fan wave, I spent a few hours perched on basaltic boulders along the Na Pali coast while patiently waiting. Although the fan wave never happened for me, I witnessed the neverending battle between water and earth that’s been waging since Creation. Just as the rocks on the coast are subjected to the tides determined to change them, we too face that same struggle when facing life’s challenges. Even when you feel you’re being pummeled relentlessly by wave after wave, it’s important to always remain steadfast as a calmness will soon follow.

Here’s something definitely more extraordinary! When sales of his single colored flowers started slowing down at his nursery in the Netherlands, Peter van de Werken began brainstorming what he could do differently. Experimenting with coloring flowers using natural dyes, he finally perfected the method and, in 2005, introduced his Rainbow Roses to the world.

Starting as a white rose, the stem is spliced into four equal portions, which are then placed in individual containers of natural plant extract dyes. As the stem draws up the differently colored water, the pigment transports to particular sections of the bloom. The result is a rose with a kaleidoscope of rainbow hues with each rose being uniquely different from the other.

For this image, I utilized a method known as focus stacking. This single image consists of 110 separate images, each with a pinpoint and finely tuned focus on specific areas of the flower. These multiple images are then precisely aligned and blended to offer you the utmost clarity in showcasing the rose's individuality and its orchestra of colors for which a Rainbow Rose is cherished.
