The light can change everything.

An hour earlier, this would have been just another white ibis perched in a tree.

But as the sun dropped lower, it lit the bird from behind, outlining every feather and turning an ordinary moment into something worth stopping for.

That's one of the biggest lessons wildlife photography has taught me.

Sometimes the subject doesn't change.

The light does.

If you've never seen one in flight, you're not alone.

Wood storks aren't the bird most people come to Brunswick County hoping to find, but they're one of the most fascinating.

With a wingspan of more than five feet, they soar effortlessly on rising warm air, barely flapping as they travel between feeding areas.

They may not have the bright colors of some coastal birds, but there's something unmistakable about them once you see one gliding overhead.

I wasn't even looking for an osprey.
I was walking over to check on the roseate spoonbill I'd found roosting the day before when I kept hearing an osprey calling overhead.
I finally looked up.....and there it was.

Wildlife photography has taught me that some of the best moments happen when you're on your way to photograph something else.

You make a plan, nature has one of its own.

I usually picture roseate spoonbills wading through shallow water.
So finding this one perched high in a tree wasn't what I expected.
Sometimes wildlife has a way of reminding you that the picture you've built in your head isn't always the whole story.

That's one of the reasons I love carrying a camera. It forces me to pay attention instead of assuming I already know what I'll find.

There’s something different about seeing a black bear this close.

Not just seeing it—but catching that moment when it stops, looks your way, and seems almost as curious about you as you are about it.

This was one of my favorite moments from my first trip to Pungo.

I went looking for wildlife.

I came home wanting to know these animals better.

And I have a feeling I’ll be making that drive back a lot. 🐻

Some wildlife encounters last for minutes. This one lasted seconds.

While exploring Grand Teton National Park, I caught a glimpse of movement in the grass. I raised my camera, and for just a moment this coyote paused before slipping back into the sagebrush as quietly as it appeared.

That's what I love about wildlife photography.

You can spend hours waiting, wondering if you'll see anything at all. Then, in a heartbeat, everything changes.

It's a reminder that the best moments in nature are never scheduled—they're earned through patience.

What's the last thing you stayed at the beach for after the sun went down?

Most people pack up and head home when daylight fades.

But some of my favorite moments happen after the crowds thin out, the pier lights flicker on, and the sound of the waves takes over.

The beach has a different personality at night—quieter, calmer, and somehow a little more magical.

This juvenile yellow-crowned night heron has that look down perfectly. 😄

I'm convinced this roseate spoonbill is halfway through telling the funniest joke in the marsh...

The wood stork doesn't look impressed, and the other spoonbill seems to be pretending not to listen. 😄
