This is the photo I chose for November in my 2027 landscape photography calendar, which is available now!

This was not the intended image I was wanting to make. I headed out hoping to photograph the sunrise over the bluffs, but this horse had other plans. He turned it into a portrait session, and I think he made the shot even better!

Would you believe this image is made up of 30 separate top-down photos, all merged together to create the final image?

When Bell Lumber & Pole in Sidney hired me to photograph their entire facility from above, I had a challenge to solve. The FAA limits drone flights to 400 feet above ground level in this situation, which meant I could only capture a corner of the property in a single photo.

Here's how I did it.

I flew my drone at 400 feet and locked in my camera settings to keep the white balance, ISO and exposure consistent across every shot. Then I flew a grid pattern, capturing 30 overlapping photos while making small altitude adjustments to account for drone drift.

Once I had all 30 images, I brought them into Adobe Lightroom and merged them into one seamless image of the entire facility.

The final result gives Bell Lumber & Pole a detailed aerial view of their property to help with their inventory mapping process.

Sometimes getting the shot takes a little more than just pushing a button!

FYI - This is a low resolution version. The full resolution version has incredible detail when zoomed in but the file was too large to upload to Facebook.

Yesterday, one of my followers jokingly told me she didn’t want to see recycled fall photos and wanted some fresh ones! 😂

As I mentioned a few days ago, recovering from surgery to repair my broken collarbone means my fall photography plans might look a little different this year.

Yesterday, I needed to wrap up a drone photo job at a farm near Kimball, so Tina drove while I completed the drone work. On the way home, we stopped at Oliver Reservoir, and the fall colors were looking great!

It felt good to get outside, take a slow walk, get some fresh air, and even put the camera to work with one hand.

A little change of plans this fall. I’m recovering from surgery to repair my broken collarbone, so my fall photography may be a little less than I had planned.

In the meantime, I’ll be sharing some fall photos from previous years. It’s still my favorite time of year to photograph, so I’ll have plenty of fall color coming your way!
