The skies cleared out after a smoky afternoon for a beautiful sunset over Boston, just in time for the fireworks to celebrate the final night of what was a very popular Sail Boston 2026. Had a great vantage point from the Skyline Monument by the Hyatt Hotel across Boston Harbor. The waxing crescent moon also made an appearance as it set behind the Zakim Bridge.

No filter needed… the wildfire smoke was so thick earlier this afternoon that you could see the sun disk with the naked eye. A quick exposure with my telephoto lens gives you this image of the sun with two sunspots visible.

Clouds dashed my hopes for a clear horizon crescent moonrise this morning, but at least they looked cool. Many had the Kelvin-Helmholtz wave-type features to them which makes up for the bad timing. Eventually the moon made an appearance, and since Perigee happened this morning, as well, it was a super crescent moon.

The Great State of Maine Air Show was an excellent time this weekend. The Blue Angels were the headliners and, while they were fantastic as usual, the real show for me was the RAF Red Arrows with their red and blue colored smoke that goes with the usual white smoke. Here's my full set of images from Saturday.

My favorite image at the top shows the Red Arrows flying past iridescent clouds near the sun up in the sky. Cloud iridescence happens when the sun's light gets scattered when it hits water droplets or ice crystals in clouds, also known as diffraction.
