Monthly update and BIG news regarding our new overlay format we will be using as well as Android 16 compatibility for our current app. This is not PLATINUM related.
We are always working on ways to simplify the process for our users, so starting this month, we did just that. We reduced our trail update files from 8 multi-state overlays into 1 single "ALL USA TRAILS" overlay. This is a big deal on multiple levels. Why? First and foremost, it resolved the issue we were having with Android 16 misloading our trails into incorrect states. Second, it allows the user to load all of the trails across the US with a single file load. The background maps are still divided into regions, but now all of our trails will load on the screen at once. We tested this across numerous devices (with live tracking) to see what the download, rendering times and performance qualities were and we were very impressed, with the exception of an 11 year old base grade tablet that was at full capacity.
IMPORTANT NOTE: This new process will begin a user testing phase to see if this simplifies things for our users. If needed, we will make adjustments accordingly, but we feel pretty good about this one! If you are using and older Samsung tablet that doesn't perform well, we urge you to upgrade to a newer, faster tablet. You will be much happier anyway. As you can see below though, we had some great results, even on some older units.😎
