Behind the closed doors of the Harrisburg State Hospital [part 2]
The Harrisburg State Hospital charged about $2.00 per week for their normal patients and then $3.00 to $10.00 for private patients. At the turn of the 19th century, the hospital drastically changed and the state bought the nearby farm to become a part of the hospital. This was part of the newly adopted "Cottage Plan" which turned the traditional Kirkbride layout into a 1,000 acre and 71 building campus. At its height, the hospital held 2,441 patients. Because of how self sufficient the hospital became, locals referred to it as the "City on the Hill."

Behind the closed doors of Harrisburg State Hospital [part 1]
Formerly called the Pennsylvania State Lunatic Hospital, the building was Pennsylvania's first public health facility to house the mentally ill and insane. It opened in 1851 by Dorothea Dix, the woman who pushed for the legislation to establish these facilities. The hospital could be seen from the entire city of Harrisburg and it's bronze dome glistened in the sun, though today the forest canopy shrouds the campus. Through the various faces it has had over the years, it ended up becoming a 295-acre site and completely self reliant with farms and gardens. It closed on 2006.
Thank you for the amazing tour
