We went looking for whales…
…and never saw one.

Instead we were surrounded by hundreds of dolphins.

We watched a determined sea lion claim a buoy as his own.

Spotted the fin of a shark.

And spend a couple of hours simply enjoying being out on the Pacific.

Wonder rarely arrives exactly the way we expect.

Sometimes it leaps out of the water instead.

It’s often that the most beautiful discoveries aren’t the ones you planned to find.

I came to Mission San Juan Capistrano excited to explore its history, architecture, and faith life.

And then…

I found myself standing beside this little pond much longer than I expected.

Oh, my goodness, the lilies!

Admiring the colors and texture.

Appreciating one bloom even more vibrant than the last.

It’s funny how that happens.

The places we remember most aren’t always the ones we travel to see.

Sometimes they’re the quiet corners we almost walk right past.

I think that’s one of the gifts of slowing down.

250 years.

Long before California became a state…
Long before this was even part of the United States…
People walked through this very arch.

This quiet corner of Mission San Juan Capistrano is known as the Sacred Garden. Beyond it stands the sacristy – the only part of the original Mission church still standing after the devastating earthquake of 1812.

Above the garden hang four bells. Two are original. Each is named for a saint, and they still ring for special occasions.

I found myself lingering here, imagining all the lives that have passed beneath these bells over the last 2 1/2 centuries.

Maybe that’s why places like this feel different.

They remind us that while our lives move quickly, faith, beauty, and hope have a way of outlasting us.

This year, Mission San Juan Capistrano celebrates 250 years – a remarkable milestone for a place that has quietly witnessed so much history.

Some places aren’t just visited.

They stay with you.

The best part of traveling isn’t just checking places off a list.

It’s watching your grown kids become your favorite travel companions.

This past week we explored California together – whale watching, beaches, sunset, wineries, laughter – but those aren’t what I’ll remember most.

I’ll remember conversations that lasted longer than the drive. Slow walks on the beach. Watching the sun disappear into the Pacific. And the gift of simply being together.

The photographs will always bring me back to California.

The memories will always bring me back to these people. ❤️

One thing I’ve come to realize is that every finished photograph has two stories.

There’s the story inside the frame…

…and the story of everything happening just outside it.

The camera remembers the light.

It doesn’t remember laughing over s’mores on the beach, spotting dolphins, wandering through the Mission gardens, or stumbling upon little places we’ve never planned to find.

And it certainly doesn’t remember the quiet joy of watching my children – now adults – choose to spend this time together.

Those are the moments that stay with me.

Over the next few weeks, I’d love to share more than just the finished photographs from this trip. I’d love to share the stories behind them.

Because I realized I don’t photograph beautiful places simply because they’re beautiful.

I photograph them because they’re where life slows down enough to notice what matters.

We remember how it felt.

Peaceful.

One of my favorite things about botanical gardens is that they quietly remind us to slow down.

No destination.
No agenda.

Just winding paths, blooming trees, and benches that practically invite you to sit for a while.

That's the feeling I hope this photograph carries into a home—that gentle pause we don't always realize we need.
