Sandhill Cranes at Indiana Dunes National Park - My son and I visited Indiana Dunes National Park a couple of weeks ago in search of migrating Sandhill Cranes. We heard them several times and caught a few fleeting glimpses, but it wasn’t until we were driving out of the park that we finally got our best look. There they were—still a good distance away, but close enough for us to capture a few images. After hearing them throughout the day, actually getting a clear view was a pretty exciting way to end our search! I’ve photographed Sandhill Cranes several times in Florida, but seeing them here in the Midwest is always a special treat.

Fawn at Dawson Lake - I caught this first-year fawn quietly feeding along one of the trails at Dawson Lake. It paused just long enough to give me a quick, curious look before suddenly springing toward the cover and disappearing from sight.

Backyard Cooper’s Hawk - Every now and then, we see some pretty cool wildlife right in our backyard. This Cooper’s Hawk gave us a good look before taking off. We have plenty of squirrels, rabbits, and birds for it to hunt in our neighborhood.

Raptors in McLean County - Just getting around to posting a few images of some raptors that Evan and I saw while driving around McLean County in late summer. We saw two Ospreys, a Bald Eagle, and a Merlin! The Merlin was an especially fun sighting, and it didn’t give us much of an opportunity for a photo, so I was thankful to get just one.

Fall Day at Dawson Lake - As I was birding on several trails at Dawson Lake, I always take the opportunity to appreciate potential landscape images. Even with my 400mm lens on, it didn’t stop me from noticing these beautiful scenes. The colors aren’t in full force yet, but pockets of brilliant reds, glowing yellows, and warm oranges are beginning to appear everywhere, adding little flashes of fall beauty throughout the landscape. I love this time of year, when the landscape slowly comes alive with color and every turn of the trail seems to reveal another beautiful autumn scene.

A Great Blue Heron in Autumn Colors - I will try to edit and post more of my encounter with this Great Blue Heron at Dawson Lake last night (10/14/26). It was slowly wading through this shallow part of the lake, and the lighting and colors were just perfect. I wanted to edit this image first, as I love the pose and reflection.

Sea Stacks of Olympic National Park - I was mesmerized by these sea stacks just off the beaches of Olympic National Park. I could photograph them all day and especially loved catching them during the different phases of the light as the gloomy clouds gave way to a spectacular sunset. They looked like something out of a dream or from another planet. They represent the power of Mother Nature, as the ocean waves have spent centuries carving these rocks into what we see today. This set of images is the perfect way to end my photo series of Olympic National Park and concludes my images from our summer trip across the country, ending with a cruise where we visited four National Parks.

Enjoying the Tide Pools at Olympic National Park - I captured this panoramic of one of the beautiful sea stacks on the beaches of Olympic National Park. You could spend hours just exploring the tide pools and rock formations for colorful sea and plant life. It is one of the most fascinating things about this place. The contrast of gray and blue clouds with the lush green plant life makes for some incredible landscapes. Add the ocean and the evening sun, and these beaches glow!
