Look at this perfect little Arctic Fox in her winter coat. One of the most cold-adapted mammals in the world. And still this cute.

(Note - this was taken at the Henson Robinson Zoo. While I’d much rather her be running free, I was deeply grateful for the chance to photograph and really spend some time with her.)

I always get a little nervous before I post wildlife photos.
Not because of the bears — but because of comparison.

I see so many incredible wildlife photographers and think,
“My photos look so different.”

Is that a lack of talent…
or just a different way of being in the world?
I’m choosing to believe it’s the latter.

This beautiful brown bear in Katmai was completely unbothered by me —
just existing, fishing, being a bear.

The real magic of Brooks Falls isn’t just the platforms.
It’s these quiet moments away from the crowds,
where the goal is simple:
stay respectful, give space, don’t fall while backing up,
and let wildlife be wild.

She had no concerns about being “good enough” at being a bear.
She just was. ❤️

Early July is a uniquely challenging time for Alaska brown bears, both biologically and behaviorally. By this point in the season, most bears are coming out of the nutritional deficit of spring. Salmon runs are just beginning to build and we don't usually see the huge amounts of salmon jumping the falls that we may see later in the month.
Summer also brings about a time of shedding heavy winter coats and beginning to grow in new shinier coats enriched by fats from salmon. The bear photographed here is not sick, as many people presume, but is in this patchy transitional time.

This time of year, both in Alaska and watching through the Exlore.org cams, is a time of celebration and bracing. We are SO excited to see the return of our favorite bears, saddened when another day passes without seeing another favorite, and worried about the strength of the salmon runs. The incredibly nuanced social hierarchy in this bear population (Brooks Falls) really begins to take shape as the salmon run begins to pick up steam and mating continues from June.
