The Mababe Depression in Northern Botswana is home to some of the most spectacular sunrises. It is low-lying, ancient lakebed that offers an unobstructed view to the rising sun.

Those of you who know me or have been following me since I started this journey in Photography know my obsession with the Milky Way. Photography, especially Astrophotography is a trial and error process that is linked directly to dark skies. So, how could I fly 8000 miles to some of the darkest skies on the planet without attempting at least a few Milky Way shots. The results are astounding! These images are as close to out of camera as it get’s. I used a denoise function to eliminate some of the noise that comes with any image taken at night and increased the exposure a bit and that’s it. The first image was taken in the center of camp with a bit of light to aluminate
the trees and the other two were taken at different locations around camp with a staff es**rt due to Lions roaring in the background like on the video I posted earlier.

As I start looking through the thousands of photographs taken on this trip I’m realizing that sharing all at once will be difficult, so I have decided to share one species at a time. I will start with the amazing Big Cats that brought me to Botswana in the first place. Our last four days were spent in the Savuti area ( Big Cat Country) where we could find the Marsh Lion Pride 20 plus strong, my favorite Big Cat, Cheetahs and my new favorite Big Cat the Leopard!
The first two photos of a female Leopard we followed for approximately 200 yards as she marked her territory looking for a mate which was quite a sight to behold. She would turn occasionally and glance back at us as she made her way down the road all the while we were all hoping she would climb a tree so we could all catch the photo everyone what’s of a Leopard. Well, we didn’t get that shoot but, we did get the second best shot of her climbing a dead tree sitting on the side of the road. That exact moment is when this gorgeous cat became my favorite. Not something I expected to ever happen. The first two photos are of her and the second two are of a male Leopard found days later in a different area.
Next installment will probably be the Birds of Botswana which are just as amazing as the Cats!

I couldn’t add the audio to my last post for some reason so here’s the recording of the Lions roaring each morning.

Just completed my 10 day trek through Botswana’s Okavango Delta. The most amazing and thrilling experience of my life! To get so close to these amazing animals has been a privilege and one I will never forget. Our first 3 day’s we were serenaded by 3 male lions just 150 yards from our camp with that roar only a Lion can make. It was truly special. We started each day with a visit before continuing our daily game drive.
More photos coming soon!

Our first day in South Africa was a down day for working off jet lag. We did however spend a few hours in a local wildlife reserve just to get out and about. Tomorrow our journey continues to Botswana and the Okavango Delta as we travel for the next ten days through the Moremi Game Preserve, the Savuti area of Chobe National Game Park and ends with a boat trip on the Chobe River for Elephant viewing. No big cats in this area but there will be plenty in the next 10 days. They even had lions stop by camp last week for a visit🦁🎉🎊. Can’t wait!!
We will be off the grid until May 5th so don’t expect any more photos until then. Enjoy!

Took a drive up to Sodus Point last night for my first attempt at capturing Star Trails. Star trails display the apparent motion of stars across the night sky. The process is accomplished by taking numerous long-exposures, which visually demonstrates the Earth’s rotation on it’s axis. My original expectation was to capture 160 30second images which would take approximately 1 and a half hours to accomplish. I had to cut the session short due to incoming fog and only came home with 30 images. The images were then blended into one photo that shows the star trails. More images yields more star trails and a much better resulting effect. I also learned to angle my camera a bit higher to get the circular pattern more centered in the image. My next attempt will be May 16 which marks our next New Moon.

I had hoped to get some Eagle pics this morning, but had to settle for pics of my overly energetic puppy Maggie. She was armed with her new Thermal snow suit and boots and was having a blast.
