You can just tell who runs the show in this family. LOL!

Little sister has ALL the sass, and judging by those looks from her big brothers… they know it too! I have a feeling they’ve learned it’s sometimes easier to just let her win.

This is one of the things I love about photographing siblings. Their personalities and relationships always come through, and sometimes the “in-between” expressions tell the story better than anything we could plan.

Something tells me these three are going to laugh about this portrait for years!

Who runs the show in your family—the oldest, the youngest, or the one with the most sass?

This is what legacy looks like.

For National Grandparents Day, we’re celebrating the grandparents who are the roots of so many beautiful family stories.

We absolutely loved the heart behind this portrait. Grandma wanted something that brought the generations together (her daughters and her grandbabies) all in one portrait.

Because one day, those little ones won’t be so little anymore. And this portrait won’t simply show them what everyone looked like…it will remind them where they came from and who loved them along the way.

That’s what makes generational portraits so special. They become part of your family’s story; something your children and grandchildren can hold onto long after the moment has passed.

So today we’d love to know: What is something your grandparents taught you that you hope gets passed down to the next generation?

Happy National Grandparents Day from all of us at Phil Hyman Portraits.

Twenty-five years later, and I can still remember exactly where I was on September 11, 2001.

I was at the studio and had just come out of the camera room when my dad called and said, “Something has happened in New York. Turn on the news.”

I turned on the TV and watched as the second plane hit the World Trade Center.

I remember just standing there trying to process what I was seeing. It didn’t seem real.

So much has changed in 25 years, but I don’t think any of us who lived through that day will ever forget where we were or how it felt.

Where were you when you first heard the news on September 11, 2001?

Throwback Thursday to this sweet little christening portrait. I mean… could she look any more like a baby doll?

There’s just something about these old traditions that I love. A beautiful christening gown, a classic portrait, and a moment in your child’s life that deserves to be remembered.

Trends come and go, but portraits like this never go out of style. I hope we never stop preserving these milestones and passing these traditions down from one generation to the next.

These moments are meant to be preserved.

Six girls. Six different personalities. And somehow Mom absolutely nailed the outfits!

We had so much fun having the Von Clef family in the studio for their portrait session. I loved watching each of these girls’ personalities come out as we photographed them. Some a little quieter, some a little more outgoing…and I’m pretty sure there was plenty of laughter mixed in too!

And can we talk about their clothing for a minute? Mom did such a great job coordinating everyone without making them look too “matchy.” The different shades of blue, soft patterns and textures all work together beautifully while still letting each girl look like herself.

That’s one of my favorite tips when planning family portraits: coordinate, don’t match. Choose a color palette and then let everyone have a little personality within it.

Because that’s really what a family portrait should capture—not six people who are exactly alike, but six completely different personalities who belong together.

Thank you, Von Clef family, for trusting us with your girls. We had a ball with you!

Happy Labor Day from Phil Hyman Portraits!

Today is your official permission slip to put the to-do list down, eat something good, spend time with your people and maybe sneak in a nap. Sounds like a pretty good Monday to me!

We’re so thankful we get to do what we do: photographing families, watching your babies grow up and creating portraits that become part of your family’s story.

We hope you enjoy a little extra time with the people you love today. After all, they’re what matters most.
