As a small business owner, I’ve been thinking a lot about pricing lately.
This isn’t really about photography—it’s true for almost every small business.
People often see the final product or the hour they spend with you, but they don’t see everything behind the scenes.
Let’s use a photographer charging $450 for a session as an example. At first glance, that might seem like a lot. But once taxes are paid and you factor in equipment, software, insurance, marketing, website fees, continuing education, editing time, communication, planning, and all the other business expenses, what’s left is far less than most people imagine.
The same is true whether you’re a photographer, tutor, homeschool consultant, baker, artist, therapist, or any other small business owner.
As someone who offers photography as a side business, I don’t even charge that much (at least not yet). It’s not my primary source of income, but even as a side gig, the expenses are real. Equipment still needs to be purchased and maintained. Software subscriptions still have to be paid. Insurance, travel, editing, communication, and time all add up.
When you support a small business, you’re not just paying for the final product. You’re investing in years of learning, the tools required to do the job well, and the countless hours no one ever sees.
The next time you see a price that surprises you, remember you’re not just paying for an hour of someone’s time. You’re helping keep a dream alive, a family supported, and a business sustainable.
Small businesses aren’t trying to get rich—we’re simply trying to build something that lasts. ❤️
