Myra Breckinridge collected some of the worst reviews any studio released in 1970.

Raquel Welch went to the New York premiere on June 23 regardless, and Ron was working the front of it. She had pushed hard for that part, played it opposite Mae West, and told stories about the shoot for the rest of her life.

The other two frames come from a year later and a different kind of evening, at Polly Bergen’s house in Beverly Hills on June 12, 1971.

Ron did not photograph her any differently at the party than he did at the premiere. The reviews were never his department.

Raquel Welch would have been 86 today.

Four photographs, twenty-eight years, and Joan Rivers is working in every one of them.

She is at the Carlyle in New York on September 25, 1990 for the Dallas Fashion Awards, in the year she won a Daytime Emmy for hosting. She is having dinner at Spago in West Hollywood on November 10, 1986. She is at the Pierre Hotel on December 16, 1969 for the premiere party for Hello, Dolly!, four years after the Tonight Show spot that made her. And she is coming off a flight from New York at LAX on May 27, 1997.

Ron built a career on arrivals and departures, and Rivers was almost always in the middle of one or the other.

Joan Rivers died on this day in 2014. The archive is still open.

In August 1977, Valerie Perrine spent an afternoon at a charity tennis tournament in Queens.

Ron was there for the Robert F. Kennedy Pro-Celebrity Tournament at Forest Hills, and she is one of the faces he came back with. The second photograph was made almost two years later and on the other coast, at the 51st Academy Awards at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion on April 9, 1979.

She had already stood in that room on her own account. Lenny brought her a Best Actress nomination in 1975 along with the acting prize at Cannes, and Superman had opened four months before she walked in.

Ron kept the ordinary afternoons as carefully as the famous nights, which is how a tennis benefit in Queens and an Oscar ceremony in Los Angeles ended up in the same drawer.

Valerie Perrine would have been 83 today.

Gloria Steinem, the celebrated U.S. author and activist who became one of the most potent voices of the feminist movement, has died. She was 92.

Steinem, a co-founder of Ms. magazine, was a hugely recognizable presence wherever she went. And she went everywhere: Much of her life as an advocate was spent on the road, speaking at college campuses and community centres, at rallies and marches.

She passed Wednesday at her home in New York City, according to her foundation’s social media pages.

Most birthday sets here jump decades. This one covers about two weeks.

July 1991, Los Angeles, Keanu Reeves at 26. Ron caught him at the Hollywood Palladium on the Bogus Journey night, still Ted “Theodore” Logan to most of the country. At the Directors Guild for Another You, the last film Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor made together, one he had no part in and turned up to anyway. And on July 10 at the Point Break premiere, where Kathryn Bigelow had already made him Johnny Utah.

Point Break opened July 12. Bogus Journey opened July 19. He was Ted Logan and Johnny Utah in the same week.

Ron worked premieres the way he worked everything, from a spot he picked himself and didn’t give up.

Keanu Reeves turns 62 today.

In this episode of Stories Behind the Pictures, Sofia walks through Ron Galella’s photographs of the people she grew up watching, Mel Brooks and Anne Bancroft, Alec Guinness, Burgess Meredith, Gene Wilder and Elaine May. She has a story about one letter that got answered in person, and it does not end where you think it does. Two of these faces turn out to be tied to a film she’s making right now. The iconic star of films like 1975’s The Rocky Horror Picture Show, 1985’s Clue and 1996’s  Muppet Treasure Island died at the age of 80 at his home in Los Angeles, TMZ reported.

Curry was born on April 19, 1946 in Grappenhall, a village in Cheshire, England, but spent much of his early years living across England and around the world with his parents and older sister Judy due to his father’s position as a navy chaplain.

Dolly Parton, an omnipresent country music legend adored by fans for her artistry, honesty and philanthropy, has died. She was 80.

Her death was confirmed by her family Tuesday in a statement.

Dolly Rebecca Parton was born on the banks of the Little Pigeon River in Tennessee’s Great Smoky Mountains on Jan. 19, 1946. The fourth of 12 children, Parton grew up inside a two-log Appalachian cabin with a family whose musical roots went back generations.

Actress Hayden Panettiere has sadly passed today. She was 36 years old.

“It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden. She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her — and to the millions who watched her onscreen,” her father, Skip Panettiere, said in a statement.

Her father asked for privacy “as our family takes time to process this unimaginable loss.”
