She held Ron’s photographs and said he was her favorite.

When we learned that Priscilla Presley would be appearing at a fan convention in Niagara Falls, we brought a selection of exclusive photographs from the archive—images Ron had taken of her throughout the 1970s and 1980s.

These weren’t red-carpet photos. They came from private photo shoots and personal moments. Many of the prints had been signed by Ron before he passed away, and we wanted her to see them.

She went through the photographs one by one.

With many of them, she immediately remembered the moment they were taken. Then she looked up and said:

“He was my favorite. He was definitely my favorite.”

A moment later, she asked for a hug.

Ron spent more than sixty years in rooms where he wasn’t always welcome. Some people took time to figure out what they thought of him, but Priscilla already knew.

Fifteen months before Back to the Future, Michael J. Fox ran a relay leg for NBC.

This is Battle of the Network Stars XVI, April 1, 1984, Pepperdine University in Malibu. Howard Cosell on the call. ABC versus NBC versus CBS in tug of war, three-on-three football, and obstacle courses on a college campus on a Sunday.

Family Ties had been on the air for eighteen months. Fox was 22 and the NBC team lost the tug of war to CBS.

Fifteen months later Fox was Marty McFly. The era of network stars fighting for network honor was already on the way out.

Michael J. Fox turns 65 today.

Joan Rivers worked three different rooms in twenty-eight months.

The Best of Vegas Awards, March 1980. A January 1982 memorial at the Westwood chapel where Marilyn Monroe is buried. The 46th Street Theater on a Broadway night in July 1982.

Vegas was the industry. Westwood was Paul Lynde’s memorial, four days after his heart attack. By July she was at the new musical Nine, which had opened on Broadway in May.

Rivers wasn’t the regular Tonight Show host yet. That came the next year. Ron caught the months before the network claimed her.

Joan Rivers would have been 93 today.

Tom Jones was 29 the year these photos were taken.

He’d left a Welsh mining town called Pontypridd six years earlier and now had a weekly American television show. “Daughter of Darkness” had been released that month. By December he’d sold over thirty million records worldwide.

The Friars Club dinner at the New York Hilton, April 17, a room of industry. Two months later, Madison Square Garden, June 12, a room of the public. Both wanted the same thing and Ron was there to document both.

Tom Jones turns 86 today.

Dana Carvey spent most of his career as someone else and Ron caught the in-between.

The Pasadena Civic in September 1989, the night before the Emmys went live. Church Lady had been on the air three years. Wayne’s World had debuted as an SNL sketch that February.

The Waldorf, May 1992. Carvey standing next to Mike Myers three months after Wayne’s World made $183 million worldwide on a $20 million budget. The Las Vegas Convention Center, two months later, working the home video release at the Video Software Dealers convention.

The Kids’ Choice Awards press room in Santa Monica, April 2002. Master of Disguise was four months away.

Carvey was an impressionist before he was a star, yet Ron photographed him across the years he was both.

Pebble Beach. January 1970. The Bing Crosby Pro-Am.

Not a movie set, but a golf tournament on the California coast that Clint Eastwood played regularly.

Ron showed up anyway. That was always his answer to the question of where to be. Everywhere. Always. With the camera ready.

Happy birthday, Clint Eastwood.

Ron Galella served as a United States Air Force photographer during the Korean conflict. This photograph was taken at Pinecastle Air Force Base in Orlando on March 1, 1955.

He came home. A lot of people didn’t.

Today is about the men and women who gave everything so the rest of us could keep living the lives we take for granted most days of the year.

Ron knew what it meant to serve. He never forgot it.

On Memorial Day, we honor all of them.

Nicky Hilton was a year old the first time Ron Galella photographed her. His photos of her still run everywhere, often with no context. In this episode, Nicky finally gives them some.

She walks through twenty years of Ron’s photographs of her, her sister Paris, and her mother Kathy from charity galas at the Waldorf to runway nights at the Pierre. Along the way, she revisits what may be the closest thing she and Paris left behind to a self-portrait in Ron’s archive. She names everything she’s wearing. Ron photographed her throughout it all.
