I think this will be the last macro post for a while, I need a break, and I am pretty certain you all need a break from me as well.
Over the last couple of weeks, I compared the macro setups from Sony and OM Systems, and I thought I would share my thoughts in case anyone finds them helpful.
Both are incredible systems and each has it's pros and cons. While Sony produces amazing details, it is big and heavy and a lot less forgiving. OM, on the other hand, is very portable and easier to use, still produces fantastic results, but I was not able to get the same level of detail in super macro.
Disclaimer, these are my results which reflect my experience and capabilities. As they say, your mileage may vary.
I intend to keep using the OM setup for most field macro photography, and using Sony when I am shooting macro in a controlled environment where the size/weight is not relevant.
The first 4 pictures were shot with Sony, and the last one was shot with the OM.
Complete list of equipment for each setup:
Sony:
Sony A7rV
Sony 100mm f2.8 macro
Godox V100
Cygnustech diffuser
Total weight: 2327g
OM Systems:
OM-5 Mark II
OM 60mm f2.8 macro
Godox iT-32
AK diffuser
Total weight: 953g
Raynox DCR-250 was used on both for the attached photos.
I learned that a dedicated diffuser for macro is a must to successfully control the light, and both Cygnustech and AK are great, but I think AK is just a bit better.
I want to thank Tracy Donaldson for her help with the OM systems questions I had.
