A lovely female resting on a milkweed plant in my backyard garden. This past summer I helped the monarch population grow by collecting the monarch caterpillars from my plants and letting them mature and transform is a safe netted cage. It was fun to watch the process and exciting when the butterfly emerge from its chrysalis state

Two butterflies walking along one of my buddleia plants. Usually, during the summer my plants are filled with butterflies. This past year for some reason, there was a shortage of the swallowtail butterflies in my garden. I did some research and the only solution I could come up with was the mild winter we had last year. The of the swallowtail can overwinter in our area. If the weather gets warm, the butterfly will emerge only to find no food source available, so it dies. Our February was fairly mild this year, so hopefully this doesn't happen again this year.

-Male . Black Swallowtails are found throughout southern Canada, eastern and mid-western United States west to the Rocky Mountains, and southwest into Arizona and northern Mexico. When there wings are closed the male and female are identicial, with the female being slightly larger than the male. The Swallowtail pictured here is a male, exhibiting the two rows of bright yellow spots which are paler on the female. You will find these lovely butterflies fluttering around in open areas. Their host plants consist of caraway, celery, fennel, parsley, and dill. Throughout the summer, I ususally find a few eggs or larva in my herb garden. I carefully inspect the plants before picking so as not to disturb the hatching and growth process.

! Drying Off. Spotted one of the Eagles that occasionally fly over our house, perched on top of apine tree. It has been quite rainy these past couple days, so when I looked through my long lens she (I think it is a female) looked kind of disheveled. I watched for awhile, then an hour later looked out and she was still there, just scoping out the area. , , , , , , ,

Theme for 2 weeks BIRDS. -Von der Decken Hornbill. This grand bird was imaged at the DC . Von der Decken live in eastern . They prefer dry, arid conditions, in open bush habitats. I have read about the breeding habits of these bird. The male will find an empty tree cavity and then lure a female to it. He entices her with food gifts and mudding material (made up of dirt and f***s). Once she accepts the young man's affections, she takes her place in the tree cavity and helps with the mudding process. When the female is ready, the hole is filled with mudding material, leaving a tiny slit in the opening so the male can feed the female. After the eggs hatch, the mother will break through the barrier and assist the male with the chore of feeding the young. , , , , , , , , , ,

An image of an sitting on a branch in one of the trees in my backyard, in Thornton, . Some textures were added to the print to give it a more vintage look. The male attracts a female to his nest after he brings nesting material to the spot, where the female will build the nest consisting of grasses and pine needles. The pair will usually use the same nesting spot for future broods and usually stay together for several breeding seasons.

YO !!! Across the River. A nice riverside stroll, enjoying a breathtaking view of the skyline, on a lovely fall day. This was such a scenic view I could not pass up the opportunity to capture it with my camera. Blue sky, vibrant colors of autumn amid the glitz of the city architecture. You can see the Technology Center, the tallest building in Philadelphia, rising to 1,121 feet. Up until 1986, City Hall was the tallest building in Philly. The construction of Liberty Place, during that time, broke a gentlemen's agreement that no other building in the city will be higher than the Billy Penn statue situated on top of City Hall. As you can see in the print, City Hall on your left, rising only 548 feet high, has Billy Penn looking up at these monumental buildings.

ONE HAPPY is just that. While we were in , the resort where we stayed had many iguanas running around the property. Being a big attraction when on any island, the hotel dedicated a specific area on the property where the vacationers could come and feed the iguanas. I caught this one as it was walking away from the feeding area after feasting on some tasty leaves of lettuce.

This rather large is one of many you would see wandering around the Japanese gardens at the and gardens in Boca Raton, Florida. He was at least three feet long and so colorful. HANGIN OUT was just perched in a tree along with other iguanas that were green in color, blending into its surroundings. It was like trying to "find Waldo" looking for all the green iguanas in the trees. Fun time, if ever in South , Boca Raton area, be sure to stop by these gardens. So serene and relaxing--the food is good too!
