The first few hours with your newborn come with plenty of bonding, but they also bring a series of choices about standard hospital screenings and procedures. Knowing what to expect lets you feel calm and in charge of your baby's care.

Here is a quick breakdown:

Vitamin K Injection: Newborns are born with naturally low levels of Vitamin K, which is needed for blood clotting. This injection is given shortly after birth to prevent a rare but serious condition called Vitamin K Deficiency Bleeding (VKDB).

Erythromycin Eye Ointment: An antibiotic ointment applied to baby's eyes within the first hours after birth to prevent bacterial eye infections, specifically gonorrhea or chlamydia passed during delivery.

Hepatitis B Vaccine: The first dose of the Hep B series, typically offered within the first 12 to 24 hours of life to protect against liver infection.

Newborn Heel Prick (Metabolic Screening): A quick prick on baby’s heel to collect a few drops of blood on special paper, screening for rare genetic, hormonal, and metabolic conditions.

Bilirubin Screening: A gentle light sensor placed on baby's forehead or chest (or a heel prick blood test) to check bilirubin levels and monitor for jaundice before discharge.

Hearing Screening: A non-invasive test using tiny, soft earphones and sensors to check how baby’s ears and brain respond to sound, usually done while baby rests.

Circumcision: A surgical procedure to remove the fo****in from the p***s. This is an elective, non-emergency procedure that can be performed in the hospital or at an outpatient clinic.

Every single procedure is your choice!
As the parent, you have the right to ask questions, weigh the benefits, delay procedures for golden hour bonding, or decline based on your preferences.

Ask your doula for evidence-based information on each procedure during pregnancy so you can make fully informed, confident decisions for your baby.

In Pregnancy: Personal, one-on-one childbirth education right in the comfort of your own living room—helping you understand exactly how your body works through labor, practicing comfort techniques, and building a birth plan that fits your values.

During Labor: I am right there with you. Suggesting key labor positioning, applying firm counterpressure during intense waves, keeping your space peaceful, guiding your partner on how to support you, and helping you navigate options with confidence.

Let’s talk about nuchal cords.

Hearing that a baby has the cord wrapped around their neck sounds terrifying, but it is actually super common and a totally normal part of birth! About 1 in 3 babies are born with a nuchal cord. Because babies flip around constantly in the womb, the cord loops and unloops around their neck, belly, or arms all throughout pregnancy.

Babies don't breathe air in the womb, and the cord is coated in a slippery, jelly-like substance called Wharton’s Jelly. This built-in cushion keeps oxygen and blood flowing safely even if the cord gets looped or tugged during labor.

When baby’s head emerges, your provider will gently check for the cord. Most of the time, it is loose enough to slip right over their head. If it’s a bit snugger, they use simple maneuvers so baby can slip right through the loop safely.

A nuchal cord is rarely an emergency, and your care team handles them every single day. Your body, your baby, and the cord itself are remarkably smart and designed for this journey together!

Will your insurance cover your doula care and birth prep?

There is a really good chance it will!

Navigating insurance during pregnancy can feel like a lot to figure out, but here is the quick breakdown of how we can get your support covered:

- Medicaid: Michigan Medicaid covers 12 flexible visits plus continuous birth support. (And the birth doesn't even count toward your 12 visits!)

- HSA/FSA Cards: You can use those pre-tax dollars directly for doula care and birth prep.

- Private Insurance: Some commercial plans will reimburse part or all of your care with an itemized superbill I provide.

What having me by your side looks like:

- In pregnancy: We dive into custom birth prep, practice hands-on comfort techniques, and build a birth plan tailored to your values so you feel truly prepared.

- At your birth: I am right there with you. Hands-on help with positioning, keeping your environment calm, supporting your partner, and helping you navigate your options.

- In postpartum: In-home check-ins to make sure you are resting, healing, and feeling confident with feeding, whether you are nursing, pumping, or bottle feeding.
