Recourse:
The inscription surrounding the figure reads:
"O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee."
The word recourse here means to seek aid, to appeal, to turn toward.
Notice that it says nothing about whether that appeal is answered.
That uncertainty is exactly what this photograph embodies.
The figure extends its hands.
The darkness refuses to reveal more.
The viewer stands before it.
Everything else remains unanswered.
