Flume Leather Co.

Flume Leather Co. Flume goes with the flow of modern design, but goes against the current by carving their own path in the industry. Flume Leather Co. What Flume Leather Co.

is a young brand started by young makers. In the summer of 2015 Flume Leather Co. founder Luke Davais met with Nimi Einstein to talk design while enjoying a cup at Lionhearted Coffee. With no prior knowledge of the material, Nimi and Luke began using small scraps of leather from Oregon Leather Company and pieces from Scrap PDX in order to try out hand stitching and sewing patterns. After investing

in tools, and making do with what they had, the two began to create leather goods in a way that have never been done before. By using classic materials and forming products using modern design-the two created radical models of wallets, bags, pouches, and other goods. After going through the design process over and over gain until each good was refined to be the most ergonomic and functional it could be, Luke began branding a small company while literally branding his leather. The word Flume is used to describe a winding stream between a deep narrow ravine. This was found to best describe the small company, not only for its geographical location in Troutdale Oregon, but to prove its difference in the leather goods industry. Many companies are more interested in mass producing goods at the cheapest rate in order to make a profit. however goes out of its way to get locally sourced and ethically responsible materials in order to make its hand made goods. Flume Leather Co is going against the current in the leather goods industry. Many partners have made this company possible. The design community in Portland Oregon is so strong that most makers would rather see a friend succeed rather than make a profit. People like Peter Le who designed the brand logo, Kylie LaCour who has taken most if not all of the photography, and Maja Dlugolecka who has modeled our branding strategy. Along with many others like Lionheart Coffee Co. for offering up their cafe for photo shoots and those apart of PSUGD and A+D projects that have helped on the sidelines of this branding project. "In the relationship business." holds most important is its relationships with its community and its opportunity to help others. All products are not only meant to help the users everyday life-but to avoid harsh working conditions for those in the tannery process, and to support ethical production, but Flume also chooses to support locally sourced materials and American based products. Overall, Flume is in “the relationship business” where people matter more than profi. That's why all leather scraps in the hand making process are donated to Scrap PDX to keep the legacy of design exploration alive for other makers. It also is an opportunity for fundraising and collaboration. If Flume Leather Co. is able to help in any way, or able to collaborate with any local makers-we would love to hear about it. As of now-the best way to make a difference is to search for the real cost of your current goods. Revise your daily habits to live a minimalist lifestyle that gives back to the community, and support small local businesses like us. Thanks for being a part of Flume Leather CO. Be like a flume. Live against the current.

As for now, Flume Leather Company will be closing its (online) doors on March 19th, on its 3rd year anniversary. This means our online store will be officially off-line on March 18th at midnight, and will no longer accept custom orders, purchase orders, or be posting to this profile consistently. New opportunities brought me to the position where I’m unable to give the time and effort this company deserves.

I couldn’t have done most of this without a huge amount of friends and support to rally around me. So here’s a huge shout out for all of their help and support!!!

thanks so much for being my first customer and emailing me directly after to let me know my checkout page still had errors 🙃

Thank you and for opening up before construction to host the launch of the brand. Also, thanks for hosting a cool event at Grovemade a while back. That was a first date spot for me and my now wife, and we love sipping your coffee/beer and remembering that day.

Thanks for starting the fire that lead to this creative exploration. I met all the encouraging designers, instructors and local creatives that were necessary to make this possible. Also shout out to for enabling me to sell my designs for the very first time.

Thanks for inviting me over to your place that one time with and to make stuff in your living room. I haven’t quit making stuff since that sunny afternoon. You guys rock

Thanks , , , , , and so many other retail spaces that opened their doors to host pop-up shops. These one-day shops were KEY in building Flume as a company.

Thanks to , , and Cody of , and all the photographers that were able to capture all these details. And huge shout out to all the models , , , , , and that made this stuff look so good!

So stoked to have worked with so many other creators like studio to create a product by and for makers. So fun to work with and feature artists and illustrators , , and . Wow you are talented and I’m so thankful for the chance to work with you fine folks.

Thanks so much to my parents, who let me mess up the garage while making stuff my entire childhood, and even let me start this business out of their garage when I came back to live when them in college. Sorry for the mess …

Thanks to my sister Kelsey who let me borrow her Nikon camera in 2011, I promise I’ll give it back on of these years, but look at the great photos we got with that thing!

Thank you to my dear friend, and wildly successful designer, maker, model, and overall human . Your personality, friendship, and assistance is largely why this company had any success. Your design work helping with lettering, campaign design, and directing these shoots is just a fraction of your untapped potential as a Portland creative, and I am so thankful your path brought us to work together. You are such a talented person and I am so grateful for your help. Let’s keep making stuff!

And lastly, thank you to my wife for ordering the first purse I ever made. I’m convinced that if it wasn’t for this little company, you would have had no excuse to hit me up after working together at Starbucks, and we may have never gotten together enough times to start to build a life together. Who knew what a purse could do! I love you Kelli! Thanks for believing in me and supporting me through this crazy venture, and for sticking around even though I had to sell wallets in order to pay for our dates.

Well that’s it for now

Love you folks,
Let’s stay in touch

This has been my shop view for the last three years. Lots of vegetable tanned leather from down the road at Oregon Leather Co, lots of dye splatters, IKEA cutting boards at the wrath of punching every hole needed to hand stitch each piece with waxed thread. I LOVE this spot, even during the sweltering summers and freezing winters. I wouldn’t trade this space for the world, and I’m sad to see less of this space from here on out.

Flume Leather Company will be closing its (online) doors on March 19th, on its 3rd year anniversary. This means our online store will be officially off-line on March 18th at midnight, and will no longer accept custom orders, purchase orders, or be posting to this profile consistently. New opportunities and brought me to the position where I’m unable to give the time and effort this company deserves.

I am still so proud to have found a way to make something with my hands, and in a way that contradicts the mechanical and harsh processes of todays typical product. I researched and learned the right way to make leather goods, sourcing the best leather treated with plant products instead of harsh chemicals and balms like the bad stuff. The in-house treatment of the leather stuck to those standards, only using pigments and plant based treatments that were naturally derived and not harsh on the environment or the hands that made it. NOTHING WENT DOWN THE DRAIN, and as a born and raised Oregonian closely tied to the waterways of the gorge, this was hugely important to me, and inspired the name Flume Leather Company. Named after a natural waterway, Flume products were designed and named accordingly, and only made with materials and a processes that were not a detriment to these waterways.

I’m really sad to see this project go for now, but so so SO happy I was able to learn about and educate those around me the benefits of a thoughtful hand made process.

Bye for now,
Love - Flume Leather Co.

Hard to put into words how much this little company means to me, and even harder to decide to close up shop. Flume Leather Company will be closing its (online) doors on March 19th, its 3rd year anniversary. This means our online store will be officially off-line on March 18th at midnight, and will no longer accept custom orders, purchase orders, or be posting to this profile consistently. New opportunities and have brought me to a position where I’m unable to give the time and effort this company deserves. I don’t think I’ll ever quit making stuff out of leather, but Flume Leather Company is done for now.

My name is Luke Davais, and, while I was an art student at PSU, I started an open ended project where I branded, product designed, photographed, and managed a small leather goods company. I had no idea where this would go, but so happy I pursued something so purposeful and challenging while I had the resources. With GREAT help from GREAT friends I was able to finagle some real success with this company, and even discover opportunities unforeseen when beginning this project. This gig started as my thesis project in school where I was able to host an event to launch the brand at our dear friends location , and from there was featured in many awesome and creative collaborations, retail spaces, pop up shops, and design events around town. Outside of growing my skills as a designer, this company produced products and stories that brought smiles to a range of customers all over the USA as well as Mexico. The range that this company got from social media was insane, and reached so many fine people all over the globe. We made leather craftsman friends from around town, the east coast, as well as companies abroad in Europe! Still so happy how far our parcels traveled over the last three years.

I’ve learned a ton. So much so that Flume Leather Company was the most viewed project in my portfolio and landed me a design job in Portland OR. I now do what I love everyday, and I feel like Flume got me there. I owe a lot to this little company.

Thanks Flume Leather Co,

Love you! @ Troutdale, Oregon
