Went hiking in Picacho Peak National Park to see the wildflowers and get a little hiking done. Lupines and California poppies were abundant with a sprinkling of globe mallow and other wildflowers. The views were stupendous!

More photographs of the lone lioness near the Sand River in the Mala Mala Game Reserve.

The story as I heard it from the Rangers is that her pregnant mother survived the slaughter of her entire pride. Her mother gave birth alone, but mother and siblings were lost over the years to predation and/or disease. This lone lioness must hunt alone, but she also doesn't have to share her kills. She apparently does quite well with waterbuck.

Halloween morning 2022 was spent down by the shores of the Sand River in the Mala Mala Game Reserve of South Africa. It was a great morning watching the wildlife along the shores of the Sand River, including watching these two hyena moving along the river and enjoying the water.

This is a series of photographs of a male ostrich doing his part in incubating eggs.
Ostrich eggs are incubated by the dominant female by day and by the male by night, using the coloration of the two sexes to escape detection of the nest, as the drab female blends in with the sand, while the black male is nearly undetectable in the dark.
These photographs were taken near dusk. The male ostrich stands and looks around for predators. Satisfied, he spends some time counting the eggs. Then he sits and starts to tuck the eggs underneath him. Not satisfied he rises to a crouch and readjusts his position before settling down.

Cheetah just after sunrise surveying the grasslands of Tiger Canyon in Africa.

Image taken at Tiger Canyon Private Game Reserve, Free State, South Africa. These tigers are proudly in Africa as part of an ex-situ project - to save a species outside its normal home range. Tiger Canyon is the only expanding population of wild tigers outside of Asia and currently, with the only wild, white tigers on planet Earth. The tigers establish their own territories, are free to hunt their prey and create their own family groups.

Another high key photograph as suggested by Rangers/Guides at Tiger Canyon. Blowing out the dried grasses lends an ethereal quality to the beautiful cheetah in this shot.

Lone lioness near the Sand River in the Mala Mala Game Reserve.

The story as I heard it from the Rangers is that her pregnant mother survived the slaughter of her entire pride. If I got the spelling right this is Masindi in Tiger Canyon. Our Rangers/Guides suggested photographing in high key when our subjects were in the shade. I really like the way the high key photographs turned out. Blowing out the dried grasses really emphasizes the beautiful tiger in this shot.
