I really like Gavin Bethell - Photographer content, and I agree with his point: if your photography isn’t good, you won’t build a profitable business.

What are the hardest sports to photograph?

The answer isn’t always about speed. It can come down to lighting, distance, timing, unpredictable movement and how quickly the moment disappears.

In this video, I’m ranking my top five hardest sports to shoot.

Because hummingbirds are basically tiny flying curveballs. 🐦

They change direction without warning, move incredibly fast, and give you almost no time to react.

Photographing them forces you to practice the same skills sports photography demands: fast shutter speeds, autofocus tracking, anticipating movement, composing quickly, staying patient, and reacting decisively.

You’ll miss a lot of frames—and that’s the point. Every miss teaches you something about timing, camera settings and anticipation.

If you can make sharp, intentional images of a hummingbird, you’ll feel a lot more prepared when the action starts moving in front of you.

I tried switching to half-shutter focus… but my muscle memory had other plans. 😂📸

I kept using back-button focus anyway.

The truth is, both methods have their pros and cons. Use whichever feels natural and helps you get the shot. It really isn’t something worth stressing over or arguing about.

The best focus method is the one you can use confidently.

I finally thought I had my dream lens from ! While this lens will replace many others in my bag for travel, I still need that 2.8 for my sports photography.

That 100-300 f/2.8 is so versatile for indoor sports like basketball and volleyball. I know my boys over at Sony will get us one eventually cause they are always cooking!
