Romania is a country where the traditional ways of the past meet the promise of the future, creating a tapestry of authentic traditions, picturesque villages and a rich cultural diversity. We have just a few spots left in our 9-day adventure as we uncover the unknown face of this fascinating country.
Our first stop takes us to the Bucovina region. Famous for the tradition of painting Easter eggs, it's also known for its stunning landscape and painted monasteries. We'll visit an impressive collection of over 15,000 painted eggs, watch the locals bring in their hay and pile it in handmade haystacks, and visit two of the regions most famous painted monasteries...Voronet and Sucevita.
From Bucovina, we travel to Maramures, perhaps the most authentic region of Romania, where we'll photograph the daily life and traditions of the locals and visit the village of Ieud and its Unesco World Heritage site of wooden churches and the Merry Cemetery of Sapanta. You'll feel as though you've stepped back in time.
Next up is Transylvania. Here we'll gain insights into the gypsy culture as we visit a Roma family and learn about and photograph their unique crafts and traditions. We'll also visit the quaint and medieval villages of Sibiu and Brasov and of course the most famous site in the region, Bran Castle.

50 years ago today! Ansel Adams and Imogen Cunningham!
In early 1975, Ansel’s old San Francisco photographer friend, Imogen Cunningham, called, saying she had been commissioned by the relatively new People magazine to photograph Ansel for an article they had planned to do on him in their Arts section. When she arrived, she declared “Ansel, I am going to photograph you, and you are going to photograph me!” He replied that he was delighted to see her and would be delighted to pose for her whenever she was ready, but in the meantime he was quite busy. Well, she proceeded to goad and goad him into photographing her as well. He finally gave up and said “Alan, go get the Hasselblad – and this image I think perfectly expresses Ansel’s exasperation! They wound up spending much of the day trading places in front of their respective cameras, and Ansel wound up making some absolutely beautiful portraits of her. They really were very fond of each other – though Ansel liked to opine that she had acetic acid in her veins rather than blood.

I, happily, had the freedom and opportunity to photograph the two of them photographing each other!
