The response to Gloria Steinem and Dorothy Pitman Hughes has been a powerful reminder of how deeply their work continues to resonate.

In 2013, I had the privilege of photographing Gloria and Dorothy as they recreated their iconic 1971 raised-fist portrait. More than forty years separated the two images, but their friendship, strength, and shared commitment to empowering women and advancing equality remained unmistakable.

The photograph later became part of the permanent collection of the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery.

ACTOR — What If They Find Out

A song about self-doubt, pretending to be stronger or wiser than we feel, and the fear that someone will eventually see through us.

Maybe peace begins when we stop performing and simply allow ourselves to be who we are.

These songs are becoming the foundation of a larger storytelling journey — one that will eventually lead to live speaking events that combine the songs with the thoughts, stories, and experiences behind them.

For most of my life, I’ve told stories through photography and video. Now I’m discovering another way to tell them—through words and music.

“Just an Old Man (Caught Between Living and Dying)” is one of the first songs I’ve written. It turns some of the thoughts, fears, gratitude, and uncertainty of my three-year battle with cancer into a story set to music.

It is deeply personal, but I believe its questions belong to many of us as we grow older and become more aware of how precious—and fragile—life can be.

I am just an old man caught between living and dying. But while I’m here, I still have stories to tell.

“Getting clean is hard to do alone. Most times, it takes many tries, a lot of failures and a great deal of patience.”

The song tells the story of an addict struggling to get straight and the woman—his “angel”—who refuses to give up on him. Sometimes recovery doesn’t happen on the first try, the second try or even the twenty-third. But this time, the twenty-fourth attempt becomes the moment everything finally changes.

The song also happened to be number 24 on Dave’s list of recording ideas, so including #24 in the title seemed especially fitting.

I Can't Remember is written from the perspective of someone living with dementia—not to explain the disease, but to help us better understand the person.
