Wao… the big 16 for my beloved David C.
You were born on the same day as the great Walker Evans and to the beautiful music of Cat Stevens’ Morning Has Broken.

You were also named after your grandfather, who carried strength and kindness in equal measure, a quiet echo I still see in you.

Maybe that’s why there’s always been something soulful about you, even when you’re lost in your music, your fashion, or the world you’re creating for yourself.

For the longest time, you were my little co-pilot on every adventure and road trip, my travel companion through winding roads, sunsets, and stories we collected along the way.

I love you so much, my beautiful, sensitive, creative, kind-hearted son.

It’s hard watching you grow so fast because part of me wants to hold on forever, but this is life, sweet and bittersweet all at once.

I know you have a good heart, one that doesn’t need any religion to guide it, even though you carry both Jewish and Catholic roots within you. My wish is that you always stay true to it, to your heart and your sense of kind justice.

And as you grow into this new chapter of your life, I hope you never take for granted the love and safety that surrounds you. So many kids your age in this country are being torn away from their parents by cruel systems that lack compassion. My hope is that you always carry empathy for them and for anyone who suffers in everything you do.

Stand for kindness. Stand for fairness. Stand for justice. The world needs your generation, and especially souls like you, to make it a better place.

Sixteen years of stories, and yours will always be one of my most beautiful 💙
