“They're not at rest until they're in the ground in a final resting place that they no longer have to worry about being disturbed again."

- Alex Wesaw, director of American Indian Relations at the Ohio History Connection

Some of the roughly 7,100 remains have been at the Ohio History Connection since its founding in 1885. New legal language could allow those ancestors to be laid to rest.

A semiconductor is exactly what its name suggests – it’s material that is sometimes but not always conductive, and thus able to control the flow of energy. The semiconductors, commonly called chips, that researchers create at Nanotech West are more complex and involve many components and multiple processes to create them, said Dave Hollingshead, manager of research operations.

The ones that tech giant Intel will manufacture at two new fab plants at a mega-site in New Albany will be even more complex, he said.

The chip plants, described by Intel as a $20 billion investment, are under construction and could begin production as soon as 2025. Intel has said they will create 3,000 company tech jobs.

But industry experts have raised the question: will there be enough skilled workers to fill them?

Experts estimate the U.S. semiconductor industry will need between 40,000 and 90,000 skilled workers in the coming years.

Laughter and applause are not sounds usually associated with prison, but both were common on Tuesday at the Sunflower Arts and Music Festival at the Ohio Reformatory for Women.

For the first time ever, incarcerated women and men from three Ohio correctional institutions sang together in harmony.

Click the link below to read the story, OR listen to the audio from the radio story, which includes performances from the Harmony prison choirs!

Event coordinators said they made history as choirs from the Ohio Reformatory for Women and Pickaway and Madison correctional institutes sang together in one room.

So, I may have dropped off the face of the (Facebook) Earth for a few months, but that's just because I was getting settled in Columbus, Ohio, where I'm now a radio reporter at WOSU 89.7 NPR News! That's right, the "miscellaneous" in AV Photography & Miscellaneous now includes radio!

Before 2021, most challenges were aimed at one book. Now it’s common for as many as 100 books to be challenged at a time.

EAST PALESTINE — “We will never forget the people of East Palestine,” U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said Thursday while standing yards away from the site where about 50 Norfolk Southern train cars derailed earlier this month.

Buttigieg spent the morning in East Palestine, using his visit to highlight a need for more safety regulations for the rail industry. At the same time, he reassured the village that Norfolk Southern would be held accountable for the accident that led to the release of hazardous materials into the air, water and soil and upended village residents’ lives.

Buttigieg spent about an hour in the early morning navigating the mud and wreckage alongside the tracks where the Feb. 3 derailment happened. As he toured the site, he talked with staff from the National Transportation Safety Board and USDOT’s Federal Railroad Administration and Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration.

MECCA — In the blistering winds Friday morning, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Park Ranger Jamison Conley stood on the state Route 88 causeway and counted six bald eagles, including a pair of dark-colored juveniles having an apparent meeting of the minds on the ice to the south.

A few miles north at the Mahan Denman access area, Conley counted seven more bald eagles perched on branches or flying above the treeline.

While Mosquito Creek Lake did not participate in a nationwide bald eagle count in January as it has in years past, Conley said America’s bird is still flourishing at the lake.

“While they’re no longer an endangered species, it’s important to still make sure that we’re in an upward trend and that we’re not seeing us go backwards,” Conley said.

YOUNGSTOWN — You never knew who you might find pouring a beer at Rotary Club of Youngstown’s Groundhog Beerfest Saturday at Stambaugh Auditorium.

Pouring samples of Youngstown-based Noble Creature Cask House’s “Fickle Mistress” and “Basement Drafts” was Aimee Fifarek, who in addition to being a Youngstown Rotarian, is the director of the Public Library of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley.

“We have a great crowd,” Fifarek said. “We’re so lucky that we have a great crop of local breweries we can showcase.”

At Penguin City Brewing Company’s table, it was a Boardman Rotarian, Howard Mettee, who was dishing out drinks.

Behind Warren-based Modern Methods Brewing Company’s table was its owner, Adam Keck — along with Nick Greco with Garrett’s Mill & Brewing Company, who was pouring Modern Methods samples all the same, and Ryan Adams from Noble Creature.

“It’s nice to see friends that we don’t always get to hang out with,” Keck said. It was also nice to help the Youngstown Rotary with its main fundraiser, he added.

HOWLAND — Howland native Ethan Deemer, 22, just returned from his second trip to the Middle East, where he most recently spent 10 days as part of the first cohort of Israel on Campus Coalition’s Geller International Fellowship.

Deemer, who studies economics and political science at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, said he has come away from his trips a little more confused each time — and that’s not a bad thing.

“I think this is one thing that really struck me: it’s super easy to feel like you understand something about a problem when you’re 10 steps away from it, but when you’re boots on the ground in a region, you really see how much more complicated things are,” Deemer said.
