Dana Marie Art

Dana Marie Art Photographer. Storyteller. Helping families hold onto what matters most. I’ve been an Artist my whole life, expressing myself creatively in one form or another.

Photography became a true passion over a decade ago. I studied at George Mason University and earned a Bachelor of Fine Art degree in Photography and as much as I still love film and the darkroom, I work primarily in digital these days. I’m all about being real, technically speaking, some would call me a custom, or lifestyle, or photojournalistic photographer. I call myself a narrative artist, a s

toryteller. I’m not talking about fairy tales, which have their place, just like the studios with their cookie cutter props and obligatory poses. My stories are meant to capture life as it happens, where it happens, unique and genuine personalities, relationships, and life’s perfect imperfections through beautiful images. I shoot in natural light, preferring the beauty of the outdoors, but love the intimate spaces and getting to know you in your home. I love collaborating with creative people who have a vision for their session or what they want to do with their final images like a personalized photo book, wall art for their home, or anything that can make our imaginations run wild. I would love the honor to document your story, whether it’s a milestone or just your everyday. I look forward to meeting you! And don't forget to click the "like" my page to show me some love and to get the latest updates, photos, and information.

There’s something about Paris that slows you down if you let it.

Not the Eiffel Tower or the Louvre. It’s the other things like an old worn door. The way the light hits a café window at the wrong time of day. The details most people walk past without stopping.

I took hundreds of photos on this trip. The ones I keep coming back to are the quiet ones. The ones with a story attached, not just an image.

That’s been on my mind a lot lately. The difference between a photo and a story. And what happens to the stories when we don’t write them down.

I’ve been thinking about this a lot and working on something around it. But first, what’s a photo you have that has a story only you know?

I’ve been quiet on here for a few years. Life got full in the best and hardest ways, and this space just waited.

But I’ve been making things the whole time. Shooting with my phone on trips to new places like London and Paris. Showing up every lacrosse season to photograph my daughter’s rec league because those girls deserve to see themselves the way I see them. Writing. Thinking about what it means to preserve the things that matter before they quietly slip away.

That last part has become the whole point.

So this account is waking back up. You’ll see the work I’ve always loved, senior portraits and families. You’ll also see the other stuff: travel, lacrosse moments, and pieces of something bigger I’m building around storytelling and memory-keeping.

If that sounds like your kind of thing, stick around.

Celebrate Loving Day with my friends, and in honor of my own parents who had an in*******al marriage, and so many others. ❤️

Loving v. Virginia was a Supreme Court case that struck down state laws banning in*******al marriage in the United States. The plaintiffs in the case were Richard and Mildred Loving, a white man and black woman whose marriage was deemed illegal according to Virginia state law. With the help of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), the Lovings appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court, which ruled unanimously that so-called “anti-miscegenation” statutes were unconstitutional under the 14th Amendment.

The Supreme Court announced its ruling in Loving v. Virginia on June 12, 1967. In a unanimous decision, the justices found that Virginia’s in*******al marriage law violated the 14th Amendment to the Constitution.

“Under our Constitution, the freedom to marry, or not marry, a person of another race resides with the individual, and cannot be infringed by the state,” Chief Justice Earl Warren wrote.

This is so true. I struggle with making sure I’m printing and displaying photographs in my own home. Are you like me?

Remember the floppy disk? ... Neither do I! That's what we'll be saying about discs in 10 years. Photography is best enjoyed in print.
