What?
I'm currently building an Instagram page dedicated to the preservation of Black American history through vintage photographs, videos, and audio recordings. The Black_then instagram archive is small now but it'll grow to include thousands of photographs. It will grow faster with your help, see below 'How can I help?'
Who is it for?
This is expanding 'Black Then'(an incredibly valuable and important resource) to modern social media spaces popular with younger generations. I also believe in making these resources accessible to everyone. I hope that you'll share this resource with your children.
Why?
I've found that since there's zero exposure to vintage photographs of Black folks from the earlier periods of American history in schools, most people assume they don't exist. Not only is this not true but seeing familiar faces across history is important; because it reinforces our connection to who we are, and builds pride in our heritage. I don't believe Black History archives can be redundant. It's crucial to have documents of historical significance stored in multiple places.
How can I help?
The archive isn't just photos of famous people, it presents Black Americans from all walks of life. So if you have any family photos that you'd like to see just send the image over to me with a name and approximate date. If there's something you don't see that you'd like to see forward it over to me and help me build this resource for the next generation.
About me: I hold a BA in History with a concentration in Black History. I studied at Howard and UNC.
