About THIRTY years ago, when my days were tech, my nights were an Industrial music hustle. I put on weekly and monthly DJ nights and booked bands in DC, a few of which went on to bigger and better things.
One of the notables was a band named . I had the honor of booking the DC show on their first US tour, wayyy back in the 90s 😉. Everyone had such a great time that I found their onstage tunics in a shopping bag in front of the club at 3 am. Fedex came to their rescue for the next tour stop.
A week ago Covenant completed their latest tour in Brooklyn , and I couldn’t miss the chance to hang out again. Naturally I took some photos! Thanks Eskil.

I picked up my print today and have to throw some artistic respect here.
A few weeks ago I dropped by the NYC Leica store on a walk around the city. I happened upon a photographer/adventurer putting up his new show, scheduled to open in two days. His name was .
As I admired his striking underwater b+w images, most of a single animal in the inky black of the night sea, I asked some questions about his methods (it was just me, him and his crew there). Each answer bowled me over on its own.
“What kind of light do you use?”
Matt: “No artificial light — this is just dawn rising.”
“…Wow. So you set up in your scuba gear before the sun rises and wait?”
Matt: “No scuba — I’m a free diver.”
“The boat must be nearby after your drop off…”
Matt: “Actually the boat can spook the animals so I send it a distance away.”
“…So you’re in the ocean at night, boat not-very-close, without bottled air, shooting only available light…[shaking my head] OK — you’re using an SL?”
Matt: “Only M cameras.”
Now practically speechless, all I could do was look at his images with new, dumbfounded eyes.
I HIGHLY recommend visiting this show, up into January in the NYC store. Here are some of his images. Again bear in mind these are M shots, using a normal 35mm summilux, in a housing he made himself. I’ve included us together, my mind reeling, looking at the ‘Marauder’ that he shot this way and will now menace my wall.

I want to share something special here.
A few weeks ago I joined Dad in Bamberg, Germany to get a feel, together, for our ancestral hometown on his side. He’d done his research, but it was still unknown if we’d find any tangible evidence of our generations-past forebears.
We decided to make our last stop of the trip at the Jewish cemetery, just as the most-likely-unlikely place to find someone. Fifteen minutes into walking among the ancient stones, Dad called out “here they are!”
And so we met his great-great-grandparents and my great-great-great-grandparents, resting under the same stone, having both lived nearly a century (it was their sons who struck off for America).
I shot mostly film on this trip, and boy I’m glad I had b+w loaded in my old Leica that day.

The photography community of Washington DC suffered a great loss recently.
Yesterday I picked up my 1936 Leica iii and made a familiar walk downtown to drop it off with “my guy” at Pro Photo. The owner, Dickran Baghdassarian, or Dick, has been keeping my crazy collection running ever since I discovered him a bit over a decade ago.
When I arrived, only the young tech he’d trained, Zane, was there for service. He let me know that he wasn’t yet up to speed on LTM cameras. I asked if Dick would look at it. The store went silent for a couple seconds, then Zane said “I guess you haven’t heard. Dick passed a week ago.”
I can’t even count the times he solved a mechanical mystery for me, or how often I’d just sit down to watch as he began sleuthing, hoping I’d learn a thing or two. Over the years his smile and ‘what have you brought this time, Ben’ look came to be almost as priceless as the actual service he performed on my cameras and lenses.
Dick, you enriched my life and gave my hobby another dimension that rose above the tiny gears, ancient glass and metal it’s made of. Thank you.
Those of you out there who “have a guy”, treasure that relationship. They make all of this possible, infinitely more fun, and in the hobby we share, their numbers are not rising.

I had the pleasure of experiencing - up close - the spectacle washing over us a couple weeks ago . The young crowd was delirious for Empire’s psychedelic show and it was truly an intoxicating scene.
